GPS Software for s60v3 comparison?

Looks like Tomtom Navigator 6 was just announced. They've merged Navigtor and Mobile into one product. Does not say whether it supports S60 Series 3 phones though.

ATM, I'm really digging MGMaps. Once the developer implements routing and hybrid mode(overlays), it will be an incredible alternative to Route 66 and TomTom, if it makes it to the S60V3 party.

GMM gives directions and traffic overlays, but cannot be used in conjunction with a GPS receiver.
 
From what I read, the new chipsets are more sensitive (work in congested urban locations?), use less power, fix a location faster, and give a more accurate position and potentially work indoors. Am I missing anything?

I see the LD-3W can be had for less than $100. Anything missing here that is a must have? Is there a noticeable difference in the accuracy that would affect navigation other than in congested areas?
 
I was finally able to get the Wayfinder .sis file, and used it finally at lunch today.

I have three installed on my phone:

Wayfinder:
1. works well, downloading maps was a little slow, but there's an option when I get home to download some maps to my memory card and use those.
2. typing in a location to go to wasn't all that easy while driving, so i have yet to test that functionality.
3. i did notice that it sporadically zooms in and out, which is kinda annoying, but other than that I was real impressed.

Nav4All:
1. won't recognize my GPS unit so useless to me for now.

MGMaps:
1. same as Nav4All.

Nav4All and MGMaps are both Java apps, and with them running, my backlight acts sporadically. one of them has the option to keep the backlight on, which doesn't work. The backlight basically doesn't work with these two programs, at least on my N73. So pretty useless.

I have a three month trial with Wayfinder, and hope to try Route66 and maybe TomTom before making a decision. I wish I wish I wish that Google Maps supported a freakin GPS unit, that would be off the hook.
 
interesting, but i haven't checked into this "smartroaming" thing. it sounds like it merely sets up another access point. has anyone tried copying the Cingular access point and removing the proxy?

Received an email back from Wayfinder's customer support today, they're going to check into the problems with the developers, and have them test with an n73, apparently they did test with an n80. Meanwhile, i'm going to try this weekend to drive around with it in the same place, only using google earth on my laptop.

-come to think of it, if i'm driving around, i may not have internet access on my laptop (i could tether, but i'd rather know that maps aren't what's slowing it down) anyone know of a free program (or demo, just for the test) that stores the maps on the pc?
 
If the problem is that you're not sure if the GPS receiver works, then you don't have to be moving around to test it.

The GPS receiver receives position information from multiple satellites and calculates it's own position. NMEA strings, containing this data, are then generated and output to any clients connected to the receiver. As long as the GPS receiver has a "fix", then the GPS software will know your latitude, longitude, speed and altitude, among other things.

Edit: This thread has gotten kind of long and has digressed a little. Just to clarify, you're having problems with the GPS receiver. Am I right? If so, try using it with a laptop. You don't have to be moving around to do this and with GPS receiver testing software, you can see how many satellites the receiver is picking up, your location in Lat/Lon coords and the NMEA sentences.

Let me know if you need any software.
 
I am using Tomtom 6 now and I have to say I prefer it to route 66, it has more features then route 66 and displays more information. It bugs me that route 66 cannot display how fast you are going on the main nav screen, Tomtom can and much more.

See but just how it works isn't the only thing affecting my decision. I've also got Smartmovie, so I have a few movies on my phone, among other stuff. I have a 2GB card and don't really wanna sacrifice that much space to a single program. So far the smallest I've heard TomTom is 512MB. that's a 4th of my card. So size is a factor, as well as ease of use, accuracy (Nav4All is about 3-4 yards off sometimes), and visuals. I'll try to post a review this weekend, with screenshots, if possible.

And if you don't know where to find the cracked version, then you don't deserve to have it. Ask Google or Jeeves.
 
right. I'll still test it on the patio tonite. Honestly, i think it's a problem with Wayfinder, and only cause if i exit and then restart the program, it fixes for another 3-5 min. leads me to believe it's timing out when trying to read the GPS unit.

Can someone else with the LD-1W confirm the behaviour of their LED's? flashing in sequence means it's thinking or working?
 
1. Did you test out the receiver with a PC? I haven't used Nav4Free, but I had some issues with MGMaps and GPS receiver settings. If I tried the BT setting, MGMaps never detected the receiver. On the developer's site, he says that in S60V3 phones, this should be set to internal. Just make sure that you have paired the devices and set the BT receiver as authorized.

2. GPS settings may have caused your phone to crawl when running MGMaps.

3. If the receiver doesn't have a fix, then Landmarks won't create the new entry.
 
i installed birdstep software through the nokia catalog, how do i know that its working? i mean there is no option of connect on it....and when i start nav4all after having started birdstep it still asks me for a access point....it shouldnt be doing that right?
 
My LD-1W blinks red when not on and charging. Upon turning on, it blinks green at about 4-5 second intervals. When paired, I get a blue light blink right after the green light blink at the same interval. I have never seen a white LED?
 
MGMaps works great. It is a problem with cofiguration.Known problems with specific phones
Nokia Series 60 3rd Edition phones (some of the newest Nokia smartphones, like the E60, E61, E70, N80, N91) do not allow the Java application to access the GPS device over bluetooth. Instead, you need to pair the phone with the GPS before starting MGMaps and select Internal for the GPS Device in MGMaps - the application will then use the bluetooth GPS paired.

As for Bluetooth receiver. I highly suggest Oncourse 2 edition.. That lillte thing picks up 9 satelites on average..The worst signal this little guy ever get is 6 satelites.. While on the other hand i also have the globalsat 359, they both have the same chip and specs.. but the globalsat takes longer to pick up the satelite, and the max satelite it ever picked up were 3.. As for connection time to your phone or satelite, the OnCourse 2 edition win again. The globalsat takes roughly around couple mins to pick up the satelite signal or sometime up to 5 mins. The OnCourse 2 edition simply just amazing, turn the unit on.. within seconds it had 9 satelites on track. The longest the OnCourse 2 edition ever pick up satelite maybe 30 secs or up to a min. And so i had to return the Globalsat and ate the 15% restocking fee. The globalsat costs me $140 include shipping and tax.. while the Oncourse 2 edition cost me $99 include shipping and tax. Wordz!! costs more doesnt mean it's better.. If someone was to give a review on the Oncourse 2 edition i wouldnt even bother to pick up the globalsat.. There were many review on Globalsat but non on the Oncourse 2 edition. The price different was $40 so i thought play on safe size and buy the more expensive one, and i was wrong!!
