Google Voice -- Who Uses It?

I am hoping to get some good feedback on this thread... as I am considering Google Voice. I am curious to hear from others (1) if they use Google Voice and (2) how they use it.

Please chime in and share how you are using Google Voice! I honestly have not used the Google Voice application on my Nexus One. I have some ideas of how I would like to use the application but am not sure if they are farfetched.

Thanks! Looking forward to hearing back...

Awesome. I guess I need to look into it more and find what the best use would be...

do I need a stable data connection to use the app on my device? some of the areas I will be commuting through only have GPRS coverage so I do not want to convert my Voice Mailbox to Google Voice if it will cause problems.

I guess I could always ditch the app and call my GV number to access my Voice Mail if needed. Which brings up the question... can I simply hit the "Voice Mail" button in my standard Android dialer to call my GV Voice Mail once it is configured properly?

Im using it for texting, and also everyday life. Id like it to become my main number, the other day i needed to renew my passport, so I gave my G-Voice number as my phone contact. I give it out every chance i get.

And yes you can have google voice mail take over your carriers voice mail. once installed google voice has the option to config as your main voice mail.

Does anyone have experience with using Google Voice in tandem with TMobile's myFaves? It would be convenient for my daily teleconferences when I have to telecommute from home. Rather than calling directly into my work bridge-line I could temporarily use Google Voice on my myFaves to call in for "free".

Once I receive a company line it will no longer be an issue... but until then.

Google voice was my most used app until that last update that took away the ability to use it in my fav 10. I tried to restore the old version from titanium but I can't get it to restore on my DX. Its still great for the visual voice mail and sms.

i use google voice 24/7

im one of the few i know who still has their myfaves

so after adding gv to myfaves, i basically have unlimited mins (I would say and unlimited texting, but everytime i send a text via gv i receive the text back on my gv app and also on my phone text msging app but i have unlimited text msging so thats not an issue)

I only use Google Voice. I also have MyFaves, so I don't spend any minutes. Just set the one of your faves as the outgoing number (when you make a call, it says "dialing using google voice" and then some number) and set another fave as your regular Google Voice number. Never waste another minute, and downgrade to the lowest minute plan you can (it'll save you money). You cannot do this with the newest version of Google Voice though. If you go here though, you can download the last version that still uses the old way of dialing. It's slightly slower, but if you use MyFaves, it'll save you tons of money!

Oh no!! so the most recent update killed the "myFaves hack"??

I have found that the outgoing number when using the Google Voice application changes... and I do not want to dial my own number each time and then hit 2 and manually dial my number...

In my previous post, click "here", it's a link to the download of the last version of GV. It allows you to just use 2 numbers (outgoing, and your Google Voice number for incoming). You'll have to trust me on this, as it works. I'm also posting the link below. It's version 0.3.4 (#13). It's NOT the most recent version, which is a 0.4.2 or something like that.

I am just confused why they would change this...

But as long as I can revert back for now, I guess. We will see how it works.

[what is the time difference between the new and old app -- the lag to make calls ?]

They changed it to make it faster, which it does. Instead of calling the same number then being transferred to the number you dialed (like calling an operator to connect your call), it assigns a new number to the number you are calling, and dials that number, eliminating the operator. I'd say it takes about 3 less seconds to call someone, based on my limited experience with the new version. I immediately switched back to the old version when I found out about the change because I use myFaves.

I didnt notice a speed increase at all. In fact it took longer and often didnt connect at all on the 1st try. I think its their way of beating the favs.

currently i only use it as my voicemail... I keep thinking one day it'll turn into the full fledged voip app that the purchase of gizmo5 intended it to be....

but i digress

So would I maybe wanna do a Nandroid right now. Then change everything to the Google Voice stuff. and add it to myfaves. and see if it works. if so then great. and if not I can nandroid. or is it just a way to call. and if you don't do it through GV then you just dial like normal on your phone?

I've never used it. at all, but I'd love to use it for myfaves and lower my plan to the cheapest one. but my contract is up in September.

what you mean only for voicemail. so if I get a voicemail. it forwards to my GV account, then sends me it in a SMS to my tmobile number?

I just signed up. sorta confused. lol
