Goodfellas

What do people think of this film? Ive had it for a while now and was bored the other night so i put it on. It's such a great film.

One thing i didn't quiet understand was, the real Henry Hill was on the bonus dvd talking but isn't he ment to be in witness protection? Sorry it might be a silly question but i was just wondering.

quality, quality, quality film. Probably Scorcese's finest hour. Outsanding performances from all involved. Some people say better than Godfather. Henry Hill is still in witness protection.

I think he has still kept his identity secret in terms of location and change of name (not sure)?

His son and daughter wrote a book together and it seems they have had a life on the run where Henry risked their safety many times by selling his story to the press for instant cash etc.

Given that (according to his children) that he's a drug addict and alcoholic, I think he diminished the risks, and unfortunately for them, selling his story always won out before making a run for it and having to pack up and move on again.

i hate gangster films, i hate the way particuarly in this film they glorify violence and make it wonderful to be a gangster, like the line that kiRAB carry his mum's shopiing home out of respect, YAWN, go get a proper job criminal!
and a different song every one minute, the soundtrack must be huge!

So you think that gangsters don't use violence then? If you watched it properly, it demonstrated the downfall of the organisation, Jimmy, Tommy and Henry. Far from glorifying, I think it just demonstrated the psychotic side of some of the people Henry associated with (as it was mostly based on a true story).

99% of mob movies show the rise and fall of the characters, very few actually retire and live to an old age. If you don't like them fair enough but get the facts straight.

Saw a documentary about Henry Hill a few months back.

He's now come out of witness protection. He couldn't stand it. The FBI have tried and failed to protect him and help him get his life sorted several times. They've now washed their hanRAB of him.

If I remember the documentary correctly, he lives in a small town, has a menial job and basks in the glory of being a "celebrity." He knows that his carRAB are marked and that it's only a matter of time before the mob gets him. He's prepared for the fact that sooner or later he'll be discovered with a bullet in his head.

I thought this was an overated film, and not even in Martys top 5
its just too biopic like and goes absolutely no where till the final act.

I think the problem lies that once youve seen stuff like the sopranos, goodfellas just seems a little old and dated. had i watched it back when it came out, im sure i woulda liked it alot more.
to be honest i prefered Casino. the performances were better and Ray Liota wasnt great in Goodfellas.
Also the lead lady in Goodfellas annoys me (Dr Melfi from sopranos) and Sharon Stone was great in Casino.

I prefer some of Martys smaller films like THe King of comedy or After Hours

 Yeah, but Goodfellas came out way before the Sopranos so, yes... its going to feel old and dated!

Goodfellas made Ray Liotta and the reason why Lorraine Bracco is in the Sopranos is because the makers are obviously acknowledging that film.

King of Comedy and After Hours are not Marty's finest hours (no pun intended :) )

I'd rate Goodfellas well up there. "As far back as i can remember, i always wanted to be a gangster" is still one of the best opening lines of any movie.

There is a Wikipedia entry for Henry Hill http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Hill_(mobster)

Last know info:

"Hill battled alcoholism for years, claiming at one point that prison had saved his life. In fall 2006, Hill appeared in a photo shoot along with Ray Liotta for Entertainment Weekly. The small section beneath the photo stated that Hill had turned to drinking and was bouncing in between prison and homelessness in Venice, California. According to the article, Liotta convinced Hill to enter alcohol rehabilitation."

I disagree .. I think Ray Liotta played one of his finest roles in this film!
And it will appear old and dated seeing as it was set ina completly different time to Soprano's .. when things were done differently!

nice to see people arent allowed opinions that disagree with you
im not thick, i know it came out before sopranos. my point was im a fan of the sopranos, and seeing it now, its outdated. I prefer Casino. Im sorry i dont agree with you. grow up...

Lorraine Bracco was awful in the film! Sharon Stone was GREAT in Casino. Its my opinion, deal with it.

And the fact tat i prefer King of Comedy and After Hours is also my opinion.

No-one said you were not allowed to disagree, this is a forum, I am allowed my opinion in saying that I think it was one of Ray Liotta's finest performances, you don't agree .. fair enough!

But no-one said you were thick or didn't allow you to voice your opinion!!
