Good Samaratin Gone Wrong

Ok, just some background: I'm a freshman at Temple University, which is in Philadelphia. I figure I'm a pretty big kid and I shouldn't have too much of a problem taking care of myself if one or two guys feels the need to rough me up. Other than that what the fuck I have nothing in my wallet.

So I happen to have a bit of extra energy after studying for my chem mid-term and decide to go for a walk before I go to sleep. I come across a guy (I shit you not) bleeding on the sidewalk and reeking pretty badly of cheap vodka. After I get him up and walking I find out he was in the city for a Smashing Pumpkins concert and went to Checkers for a burger. Well his finger is cut down to the bone and his face is pretty messed up but he says he has no insurance so he refuses to go to a hospital and WILL NOT call the cops to file a report. Oddly enough he's also from the same high school my sister graduated from in my little town about an hour north of Philly. He said he got jumped by a couple black guys who beat the contacts off his face and left with his wallet, which like mine had no money in it. So I figure I'll walk him back to my dorm to let him use my phone and to clean up his wounds. I mean the poor guy is drunk, has no phone, no money, no place to sleep, and is practically blind. But after I get him there and clean him up the only thing he could do with my phone was get an address of someone that lives in the area. So the lady at the desk tells me the address is a scant 6 blocks north, what the hell I said I'll take him there. Well, twenty blocks and almost two hours later we get there and wake the poor guy that lives there up to find out it's a bogus address. I happen to be fortunate enough to be right next to the Temple Hospital where I took him to be treated after I assured him they would not charge him. Then I call up Temple security and got a police car to give me a ride back to my dorm.

So here I am, it's 4 in the morning and I have an 8:40 math class tomorrow. I've heard God protects drunks, but I am just really not feeling like divine intervention right now.

So yea one of the people he called from my phone called me back this morning. I think it was the guy whose house he tried to get to. He had no idea who I was talking about because I didn't catch the guys name but seemed mildly surprised he was in the hospital. Other than that he was just pissed he got a call at 3 in the morning.

With friends like that...

i am proud of you for doing the right thing. your parents should be proud. i'm sorry the guy was a liar, but then again he was drunk and probably didn't know where he was going. if i were your parents i would be extremely proud of you.

If I were a religious man, I'd say God sent you to him. Whatever the facts, you did what many would not. Many would not go out of their way as you did. Most would have called the police.

In the end the result would be the same. The cops would have taken him to the hospital, and you would have gotten home a lot earlier. But you took the extra step of trying to help him yourself. I'm sure when he sobers he'll remember the stranger that took time out of his own life to do more than just push his problems off on the local authorities.

You kinda lost me at:

"..I happen to have a bit of extra energy after studying for my chem mid-term.."

that aside I would caution you against any feelings of regret you might have. With all of the encouraging words of praise in this thread I imagine you feel much better about the situation but all it takes is one small seed of regret harbored in the back of one's mind to keep one from doing the right thing again in the future and then you become one of them, lost.

Congratulations, as it would seem that you are a real human being.

Oh, and be sure to follow the recommended dosage found on the back of the No-Doz bottle.
