When Avril organised a picnic, she brought along melons she thought would be thirst-quenching. They got through half of them, plus half a melon, and were left with one whole melon. How many had Avril provided for the picnic to start with?

Please provide answer AND explanation.

Three melons.

X = total number of melons

.5x - .5 = 1
+ .5 + .5
(cancels out -.5)
.5x = 1.5
divide by .5 divide by .5
(cancels out the .5 in ".5x")
x = 3
