Good mileage for a Jeep Cherokee?

Hello, I am shopping for a used car and I found a good condition Jeep Cherokee 1997 SE. I was wondering how they handle miles, as in how long they can last. It has 173,000 on it now. It is also a manual if that matters. Thanks!

Everything is dependent upon how well the previous owner took care of it. Unlike some CLUELESS people in this post, parts are VERY plentiful, low price, the four liter is bullet proof and depending upon what axle you have decent mileage. 18 on the highway is easy.
The only thing I worry about is the manual tranny. It was made by the French Puechou..SP?. They did have trouble. Would pull the drain plug and look for trouble.
Have two Cherokees both well over 250,000 miles and running every day.
Good Luck

It's a machine. It doesn't have an expiration date.

It will last as long as YOU maintain it. Repair it, service it, etc. Don't go cheap, whatever.

Mileage is almost 100% pointless in knowing anything about the condition of a car. I have a car that hit 300,000 miles, ran great. Another at 229k, not a problem yet.

Final note, the average miles per year, is around 12-14,000 miles.

On a 12 year old vehicle, that would mean 168,000 would still be considered "average". Yours barely has more than that.

It has perfectly normal mileage on it.

You are making a huge mistake buying a Jeep to begin with and with that many miles you are courting disaster. They ride like a haywagon, get terrible MPG, and are not known for holding up well. If you can buy it for $500 I might consider buying two and use one for parts because you'll need them.
