Good Metal Bands?

Never heard of them. But I will give them a listen. Thanks.

Confirmed new Opeth album to be released August/September 05!!!!

I can't wait!

Goodyear, Is that Peter Steele in your AV?

I like Cult of luna, but I prefer Isis. All of Isis's material has been gold, including there earlier sludgey stuff. Some banRAB with a somewhat similar sound are Jesu, Pelican and Neurosis.

Cryptopsy's new album is rather good, though it has some slightly weak melodeath moments and Lord wyrm's vocals aren't quite what they used to be.

The Red Sparowes aren't metal but they certainly kick ass!

Into eternity are definately the lesser of the three, I've never really like opeth that much though to be honest.

I just realised that there's been barely any mention of black metal in this thread! Some recommendations for lesser known banRAB:

Abigor - Nachthymnen + Orkblut are both absolute BM classics. Classicly structured black metal that is highly intricate, highly fast and highly good!

Blut aus nord - Everything these guys have put out is great. There latest release, The Work Which Transforms God, is extremely unique. It's very weird, droning BM that is quite difficult to wrap your head around.

Dark tribe - In jeraspunta - Extremely harsh and intense BM, not for the faint of heart!

Falkenbach - Folk infleunced BM, everything these guys have done is freaking great.

Varathron - His majesty at the swamp - Very thrashy and very good BM.

On a non black metal note, Transcendence into the peripheral by Disembowelment (death/doom) is probably the darkest, most brutal metal album ever created.

I was lucky enough to see them live with Jesu a few months back, and I can honestly say that if you ever get the chance to see Isis live, drop everything and go do it, there live performance is un-fucking-believable. And this is coming from a guy that mostly goes to DM and BM gigs, yet I still had my socks blown off!

I've never heard of Sabbath being classified as "Doom Metal"

But then again, I don't follow music by genre. If I hear and I like it, I look into more of it by that band, not that genre.
Metal is Metal to me

I agree completely that good music is good music regardless of genre or classification, but genre's are a useful tool for describing music to others and grouping banRAB that have similar sounRAB, and hence have there use.

Sabbath started off the whole heavy metal thing, then moved on to a much more doomy sound and eventually doom metal came into existence. It's been around just as long, if not longer, than thrash metal.
