I watched this again last night. Overall I would say it is a good film, but in places it makes me wince if not shudder....
The Good Points:
Bill Nighy
Bill Nighy
Bill Nighy
Cameron Diaz (what a pity she didn't have a bigger part but I guess they couldn't afford her).
Thomas Sangster as Sam
Oh, and of course it's got Colin Firth in it?
Did I mention that I thought Bill Nighy was good in it?
Well, quite frankly I think he gets all the best lines and definitely gets the most laughs from me.
The only other laughs I got were provided by the porno stars.
The Bad Points:
Martine McCutcheon
Martine McCutcheon swearing
Martine McCutcheon being continually referred to as overweight.
The whole Prime Minister thing.
None of this is Martine McCutcheon's fault (I'm assuming she didn't write her own lines of course...)
The very idea that anyone in public office would publicly associate themselves with someone who swears gratuitously and unecessarily in front of children (the line "where the ***k's my ****ing..." whatever-it-was just irritated and ruined even the slightest bit of credibility that little liaison could ever have had) is utterly ridiculous. It's not even a particularly nice or idealisting idea that the premier or great britain would have the bad taste to be seen romantically linked with someone like that even if that might have some appeal to a minority chav-wannabe-wag viewership. The same ignorant chav-wannabe-wag section would do better to learn the lesson that there's no way that's going to happen and that's not a good way to carry on under any circumstances.
No way, even in fun, should MM be referred to as fat on screen, and it certainly should not be woven into the main storyline! We've enough flipping anorexics in society thank you very much! That would have been ok if it was only her shallow and ridiculous ex-boyfriend who thought that, and then she ended up with someone much better. I guess that's what the storyline was on about, but for people to keep referring to her as fat as though she actually is, is just plain stupid.
Oh, and it could have done without quite so much of the swearing - did I mention that? The occasional "damn" would have been quite enough to get the point home and remain funny if done at the right time, such as when she first met the "Prime Minister". Still, I suppose that was done to appeal to the chavs because it's about all they will understand I suppose. Ugh.
