Golden compass - Review.

I've just seen it this evening. I haven't read the book.
I had the same reaction as I did to the LOTR films - I didn't dislike it, but I didn't particularly like it either - it was just a bit of a non-event. I thought it was very flat emotionally, and humourless. The CGI animals were well done, mostly, except I couldn't take the ice bear seriously every time he was shown from the back with that big furry @rse (maybe there was some humour after all) (and he talked like Doctor Who and made me think of Glacier Mints and Cresta). Are the ice bears supposed to be kind of moronic macho types?
It semed to be trying very hard to look and sound like the Harry Potter films, with a bit of LOTR, Narnia and Pirates of the Caribbean thrown in.
I couldn't really see the point they were trying to get at with the story. Maybe you need to have read the books.

It was accompanied by the most depressing collection of trailers I've ever seen - Bee Movie, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Enchanted and Saint Trinians - they all looked ghastly.

OMG I'd forgotten that.
Weren't they dire?! And weren't there a load of them?
I sat there complaining to my son that usually they don't have that many but he said it was because we are usually late....and that's what I'll be next time!

I might give Enchanted a go - looks like it might be taking the p out of Disney's other movies. You can't beat a bit of deconstructivism.

BTW, I woke up this morning thinking that I did actually slightly enjoy the film. The daemon idea might be pretty interesting - I'll probably go and see the sequels.

Edit.
I just did the Daemon thing on the website, and mine is a fox called Anwyn. :)

yeah I saw it today at 11:45 and it was busy and the next showing at 2:30 was full so it said on the timesheet board!

I thought it was really good! films generally are not as good as the books so I take it for how it comes! very good! hope the next two are equally as good if not better!
