Golden Compass or Northern Lights?

Just thought id raise the subject, seeing as the films come out under the American name (Golden Compass) Instead of the British (Norther Lights)

I think this is a first for me, but I actually prefer the American name of the book, reason been it actually fits in with the second and thrid titles more (the subtle knife and ameber spyglass) 3 objects that all play an important throughout the trillogy.

whats everyone else reckon? staying loyal to the British title? or gonna be controversial and side with me and the yanks :p

Already discussed in a Golden Compass thread :-P
I despise giving into to Americanised things, but it does fit with the object titles.

It took me ages to stop calling it Northern Lights. I'd prefer to keep the original name. One reason being that it isnt a compass at all, its an alethiometer.

Pullman originally wanted to call the trilogy the golden compassess - i.e. like a pair of compasses that you navigate with - something to do with how the world was created.

That was his working title - he then changed it to another quote from Paradise lost - HDM

it was never to do with a golden compass the US got it wrong but loved the title so much they made him keep it - he got a lot of money to do so apparantly
