Going to the pictures

I agree Sheepdog that a DVD would suffice, but there is something about going to the pictures and watching a film on the big screen that I love.
Agreed, they are now soulless places, but still.....

The great thing about cinemas back in 'the day' for me is that people wouldn't come in between films and clear up. So if you liked a film you could stay and watch it again.
Or if you came in late, stay and catch the start!
The solution is to buy yourself an enormous flatscreen or projector, a slightly muffled speaker system, a pair of satin curtains and a box of Cornettos to share around. Sorted.

I used to love those old cinemas, getting a front row seat in the circle then watching the curtains draw back, used to get me all excited. It was like a feast of the senses. You had a B movie as well as the main movie, Warner Pathe news, some wonderful previews. I remember seeing The King and I, (6 times) Oklahoma, The Ten Commandments, Ben Hur. Oh! Wonderful.

But I do have to say though, that I think I prefer these days of multiplexes, where you get a choice of films and you get a great view from whichever seat you sit in, even though the cinemas themselves are quite plain and after all, some of those B movies of the past were quite rubbish really. It doesn't matter if the cinema is packed out, you know you're going to be able to see the screen without someones head in the way.

Remember when your local cinema would play a marathon of movies in one mega-sitting? I attended a few of these. Must have been when it was a slow period for good movies. I remember going to see the Clint Eastwood spaghetti western trilogy, and the Planet of the apes (5 films!!!!!). You'd get in about noon, grab a seat, and you'd be leaving just in time for the last bus home with an arse that was deader than a suicidal dodo.
Or was it just round my way?
