Going to get my eyes dilated and terrified!

Hi everyone, so I've had astigmatism and some pretty bad nearsightedness since I was a little kid. Just a few days ago I had a sudden onset of off and on blurred vision and a hard time getting my eyes to focus.

So I went to the doctor and they're going to do an eye exam in a few days and said they would dilate my eyes. I am really terrified of this. I've never had it done and I don't like anything going into my eye in any form at all, I really hate the thought of it. I'm actually having anxiety attacks over this.

I know it is a pretty routine procedure, but I just have this fear that my eyes will be dilated, which will change my vision and I'm afraid it will never come back the same...I don't know. Maybe I'm just being overly nervous, but this is scary!
 
I am a person afraid of all things,including never riding on an elevator alone,always carrying a flashlight,afraid that the earth will get hit by something in space and that the earth will lose its magnetism,and we will all go flying forever in space.However,I have had drops put in my eyes to allow examination,about 20 or 30 times.I do worry
a little, however,for the few hours,until I can watch TV again.My wife had little vision in one eye since birth,and she was so relaxed,compared to me. She was not worried about that one good eye returning to normal. She read hundreds of novels with little more, than with that one good eye.God bless her soul.Do your best. Bill
 
Hey Lizardwoman, I am having my eyes dilated next week. I have had it done alot as I have very dry eyes, sicca syndrome, and glacoma in the family.
I have always been neurotic about anything coming near my eyes. However, having the eyes dilated is truly nothing. You look up and the dr drops a few drops of meds in your eyes. It blurs your vision for a second, maybe stings a tad and then nothing. The dr will hand you a kleenex to wipe away the extra. Don't be surprised by the yellow. The dr then will do exactly the same thing as a regular exam. Have you look at his/her ear while your eye is looked at, have you look at the ceiling, the floor blah blah. The worse part of the exam is only if your dr has bad breath.
You will need to wear sunglasses for the rest of the day. Good luck
 
Thanks for the responses guys, I'm just so freaking out because for some reason I have this fear I'm going to go blind if they do this to me. I have no idea why and I know it is likely just an irrational fear, but I can't shake it. I guess the appt just needs to get here and get overwith so I can stop stressing :/
 
I agree that getting your eyes dilated won't be bad at all! I know that once you are anxious/nervous about something, it's really hard to NOT be that way though. I completely understand! I just hope that hearing a few people who have had the procedure done and didn't think it's bad helps you somewhat :). I have never heard of anyone who had any sort of damage whatsoever from getting their eyes dilated. Just try your best to relax and distract yourself for the meantime. I bet you will feel better after you get it over with!! You can always go with someone you trust if that will help you feel a bit more calm. Good luck!
