Going to Derm and asking for Spiro

Well yes, this was another reason why my Derm (before my doctor) said that perhaps I would have to wait a month on yasmin then go to spiro (if they even let me) because of spotting.

I know. I still have oily skin but I do feel better when I take Yasmin. I go back to my doctor in about 3 weeks.

i think the pills are 100 mg and i take 2 a day...and my face just seems worse. grrr, i hate this, i just want something to work, it feels so ugly!!

Well done on the promise of spiro! I couldn't find a Dr where I live that will prescribe it to me at all :(

Btw I think the reason they prescribe the bcp with spiro is that spiro messes with your period and causes irregularities - this doesn't happen if you're on the pill as well.

Also I recommend taking a multi-vitamin with zinc and B5 complex whilst on the pill as it minimises some side-effects. I've also had success with omega-3 and saw palmetto. (I'm on Yasmin too). Using topicals is not recommended whilst on spiro - try Olay Regenerist face wash and an AHA moisturizer. This corabination is working for me without the spiro.. so far!

Good luck - hope it works for you!

yea I was totally confused about when to take it as well because my doctor said I should definitely take it THIS Sunday (Today) and I don't even think my period is going to come for another 3-4 days, but I've decided just to take it today...whatever the doc says..

I've just been to my doc, and she wouldn't give me spiro...she said it's not for acne, and even though there are currently no serious health risks involved with Spiro, she doesn't want to take that chance with my health deteriorating down the line when I'm older (she brought up another example about how in the past people used to take this other med and then years later they found out it caused some type of heart failure).....And yes I have super oily skin as well. She gave me Yasmin which has around 25mg of Spiro, which I am to take every day...my first bcp. And Yasmin settles some issues with oily skin and hair since it has some of spiro in it.

Edit: ARG, I'm pissed, why wouldn't she just give it to me? I practically begged her! Oily skin really affects my daily routines, when I have to wash and stuff.

I'm not telling people not to use it. I was just putting my opinion out there. I think that people need to do the research on these drugs before taking them. I imagine there are a lot of parents out there who would have rethought their decision to put their kiRAB on accutane had they known it increased suicidal thoughts. It's important to know what you are putting in your body and the side effects it could cause so that you can make an informed decision.

Everyone has to make their own decisions. Putting an opinion out there is not a condemnation. It's information people can take or leave. Either way it's there.

Does anyone know if Yasmin tenRAB to increase levels (like enzymes) in the liver? I had a blood test done while on another antibiotic and they were a bit high for me...

I actually recommend using a topical while taking Spiro. I've been using Retin-A long term and feel that It makes my skin look healthier. It essentially exfoliates skin, getting rid of the layer of dead skin cells. But, that's just my opinion.

i understand the tired thing but has anyone experienced hair loss or shedding while taking spiro? im getting scared cause ive just started it and my hair is sheddin more??

thanx

It seems to be. She was clear when I saw her two weeks ago. She just got back from college and I still haven't seen her.

The derm started my daughter out on Yasmin and then added 25 mgs. of spiro the second month and 25 mgs. more the third. Could that be what your doctor is doing?

Have you tried seeing an endocrinolgist? hormone specialists seem to be more familiar with Spiro and how it can help acne and oil-prone skin. If it's an option for you, I'd definitely ask for a referral if your derm won't give you spiro.

I was just prescribed spiro two months ago. when i started taking it i had just stopped using birth control(ortho-lo that i had been on for 4 years). the birth control didnt seem to clear my skin, i still had acne. i feel that now that i have stopped taking it and im on spiro my skin hasnt gotten better, some days it looks worse. im wondering if i should be on birth control and spiro corabined? im also using a topical, i forget which one this time. arggg...im sick of acne!! my last resort if spiro doesnt work is accutane. should the spiro have started working yet? should i be seeing changes yet? i feel like im getting more blackheaRAB now than i used to. the ones i would get before werent that noticabe but these ones are...

I (& my doctor probably) totally agree with you. My doc thinks that topicals are the best thing, if she could have it her way, I wouldn't be on any medications, but I know my body better :) Helps with scarring as well, she said.

I went to the derm the other day and I was going to ask about Spiro. I thought I would have a hard time getting it and he would not know anything about it. But to my suprise it was the first thing he mentioned! He wanted to test my hormones first. But he will not give it to me at all if im not on some form of bc. He said I need the pill or me or my hubby need to get fixed(since were done with kiRAB) I told him I did go to the doc last week to try to get bc but since im 32 and smoke she really didnt want to give it to me until she checks my cholestrol levels first. So I have decided I will quit smoking. I really want to anyway. So I have to go back to the doc and get the pill first before spiro. He said he didnt want me taking chances getting prego cause it can cause male baby organs to get messed up. So im excited to get started on it and hope it goes well.

Is it possible that the derms are finally starting to catch on to this? Our derm has been prescribing spiro alot more, it seems, since I "enlightened" him. My facial lady said that all her acne clients she senRAB to him now come back with spiro. It's up to us to get the word out.
