I'm a little confused though. Why would she make me take a Yasmin then let me switch to Spiro if I can tolerate the bcp? Do you think she meant to say if I can't tolerate it?

She wanted me on Yasmin first because she said something about birth defects if I were to have a baby.

I feel the same way you feel. It affects my daily routines and future plans also. I know it shouldn't but it does. My fear is that my doctor will do what your doctor did and insist on me taking a bcp. I will let you know what happens.

I'm going to see my dermatologist in a couple of days and I am going to ask for Spiro. Right now she has me using Retin a Micro which helps but doesn't control my very oily skin. I mentioned spiro to her the first time I was there and she said she has prescribed it before. But right away she started talking about birth control pill which I absolutely don't want to take. I want the Spiro. If she does mention the bc pills on this next visit I'm just going to ask for the Spiro instead and see what she says. It just feels weird asking for something they don't suggest.

I have another question about Yasmin.
The pharmacist told me to take it on the first Sunday after my period started. The problem is I can't remeraber if my period started on Sunday or Monday. Tomorrow is Sunday (6/17) and I'm not sure if it is okay to take it.
What should I do? Will something go wrong if I take it tomorrow?

Using topicals is not recommended while on Spiro? Who told you this?? It doesn't really make any sense to me.

alright. But I'm wishing and hoping that yasmin (i'm starting this sunday, i'll keep you updated) will help me out a little. 25mg is a small amount, but maybe it'll do something.

I am VERY new to these boarRAB, so hi to everyone.

I was interested in this thread b/c I just did some research on Spiro...it's not for acne. It's a diuretic given to people who have congestive heart failure and issues with excess fluid. It can cause a whole HOST of medical problems. It has helped people with Acne, but that isn't it's intention and the side effects of it may be worth it if you have congestive heart failure, but I"m not sure it would be worth it to treat acne.

I really struggle with acne. I know how terrible it is and how terrible it makes you feel. I took accutane in high school, before people knew it increased depression and suicidal tendencies. Suddenly I was spending days in my room planning how I might kill myself. It was pretty terrible. Plus the accutane caused horrible joint and back pain I STILL struggle with 5 years later.

So I guess the idea of taking something that isn't even for acne seems pretty scary to me.

I just wanted to give my point of view!!Good luck everyone!!

A couple of people mentioned it on this board, since spiro is so drying - here is a quote from caliente from a previous thread:

Olay foaming cleanser for sensitive skin. although i wouldnt recommend using a topical while on spiro, unless your doctor thinks its necessary.

My first week of taking Yasmin has gone by and Im feeling better than before when I wasn't taking anything but I still don't see any effect it has on making my skin less oily.

No-- if you're a day or two off, it's not a big deal. It might just take your system slightly longer to get adjusted to a normal cycle. And dont forget- if you're sexuallly active use backup contraception during your first month on the pill. good luck!

I took spiro for a few years and it worked very well. I had never heard of it until my derm gave me a script for it.

:( same here....so this sunday will make it my 2 week mark with Yasmin, and still have oily skin, oily as ever, have to blot so many times on the hour around 3-4 hours after washing my face in the morning. I was thinking the other day the one thing that would make a huge improvement in my life is less oily skin.

Guess what....
She gave me Yasmin too!!! I'm starting it this sunday also. I have to come back in a month and she said if I can tolerate it, she will then give me spiro. I never thought I would have to take a bcp in my whole life and now here I am.

The only reason why I'm not that upset about this is that she said she will give me spiro on my next visit.

she promised me the same thing!!!! hm I wonder if we have the same doctor ;) Though I have to wait 3 months before any consideration in regarRAB to Spiro.

Yeah it has equivalent of 25 mg of Spiro. I took my second pill but have had no side effects.:)

Accutane was originally used as a chemotherapy drug. I am not sure how it evolved into an acne medicine. Probably because cancer victims acne cleared up while using it! Spiro was originally used as a blood pressure med but it lowered testosterone in males too much so was discontinued for that. Just because it was not developed for acne is not a reason not to use/try it. There are risks to health with all mediciations and even some herbs. You have to way the pros and cons of using a medication and also take into account quality of life issues. When I had acne I was miserable and hormone therapy cleared me almost immediately. If we had known about spiro then, I would have used it for sure.
