Going backpacking this summer in europe, wondering which countries is should visit?

I was considering landing in England then going to the Netherlands and working my way down, i.e. Belgium France, Spain and perhaps Portugal, im only going for a month, so the countries have to be in close proximity ( i want to aviod the really long train rides)
