ok on tuesday im goin to the derm. hell prescribe me accutane ill get the blood tests done whatever. anyway i want to know some of your experiences with this drug. its effectivness really just anything. im a bit scared but excited that i could be having a real life in like 4-5 months. thanks anything would be helpful.

If it's really bad, and you've tried everything else you can, go for it. Otherwise, I'd avoid it. It usually works well, but some of the side effects are downright frightening, and permanent.

I've got a bit of a horror story - developed permanent tinnitus (ringing in my ears) about 3 weeks into my treatment course. Hasn't gone away nor diminished in the more than 2 weeks since I've been off it, so it looks like I've got it for the long haul.

Just make sure your certain you need it before making any rash decisions, like I did.

hangman- accutane was my miracle! the side effects of dryness and chapped lips were all i struggled with- but i would never have traded the outcome for anything! just get a good lotion and chapstick (lip ointment like Blistex) worked for me. AND make sure that your put the face lotion on right after your wash your face, while there is still moisture in your skin! The lotion will trap the moisture making your skin a little less dry- do this if your dryness gets really bad.

I have been dealing with this for almost ten years- I think I'm ready. Actually my derm wonders why I didn't say yes sooner.

I'm on day 9 of Accutane. I had to wait a month to begin my treatment (FDA requirements for females) so prior to using it, I used Differin cream twice a day in an effort to get my skin as clear as I could prior to going on Accutane. I thought it would also acclimate my skin to being dry. My doctor suggested lathering on the lip balm and moisturizer before the dryness appeared. She also suggested taking vitamin E which I start about 2 weeks prior to my first Accutane pill. I was expecting the worse and maybe more is yet to come but so far I've done really great. My lips are a little dry but I keep something on them all day long. The Cetaphil lotion has worked wonderfully. My face and the rest of my body are not dry at all. They aren't greasy either but I was expecting a lot of drying and peeling. It hasn't happened yet. Maybe its the vitamin E and all the moisturizing. I also purchased a great sunblock from my dermatologist's office called Elta. It's $22 for 4 oz. but it works great if you're going to be out in the sun. So far I've just had a few skin colored closed comeodomes appear but they have disappeared in a couple of days. At this point, my only regret is that I didn't do this a long time ago. I go for my 2 week labs on Monday and if everything is ok, then I'll get a standing lab order to go once a month. Oh, I did have a bad headache for the first 2 days but I was also menstuating and that could have been the cause as well.

Good luck. My attitude was that this drug is so closely monitored (with all the lab tests) that if anything goes wrong, they'll take me off it and I havn't really lost anything (back to where I started). If it works, I have a lot to gain. So far, I'm suprisingly shocked at how well my body has responded. I hope I can keep it up.

hi, I have read your story while researching for my tinnitus possibly caused by ruactan. I know it has been a long time since you left these posts, about 8 years!
but suffering from this ringing for about 5 days since I left ruactan. I wonder if the tinnitus went away.
Thanks.

Hey hangman, I am with you. I am going on Monday to get my first bloodwork and get the Accutane started. I am scared, but agree that they monitor things so closely that we shouldn't have to worry.

The way I look at it is I have never heard of anybody with worse skin than when they started, so it's worth a shot, right?

We might even be some of the lucky ones that find this to be the cure! Good luck on Tuesday!
