Godfather vs. Godfather 2

I watched these a few years ago (after reading the original book which was even better) and after watching them both I always thought Godfather 2 was better than the first.

But after repeat viewings the first Godfather is better. I think the suspense and drama of part 2 was what made is great, it loses this after repeat viewings. IMO Godfather was the better movie. I could watch it again and again and still have the same reaction. What d'you think?

The Godfather is the better of the two in my opinion although they are both good movies.

If you think about it, all the most memorable moments from the series come from the first film. The horses head in the bed, the restaurant assassination, and of course Marlon Brando's inimitable performance as Vito Corleone.

Plus the Godfather was the original, Godfather II simply extenRAB the premise.

Having said that I would say that both movies have to rank in my top 20 of all time.

The book was written alongside the screenplay. The film was realeased before the book. The book was written for the film. I know this because, I did a module at uni where we compared a book to a film (not only the Godfather, we had to chose our own) and I did The Godfather (rather well I thought...) only to have it pointed out to me by my american lecturer - who had actually worked on the film, that the film came before the book! :o
I thought the book was better, foe simple and various reasons, mostly because of the insight into Luca Brazi - for me, anyway.
I think The Godfather 1 is the best film. I like to see the family corruption and envelopment of Michael - how he's drawn in etc. The second film is a different type, ie the background history ets. - still good and critics argue the best, but I prefer the first one.

I agree with you.. the secnd one extenRAB the story which is why the second becomes great, but the original is the classic and repeat viewings of it definetly re-inforces this. Plus, you watch Michael in the first and you compare what he was like to how he become by the 3rd and it makes the first a better watch, the more you watch these films.

Godfather is a classic trilogy, up there with Star Wars (original 3), LOTR epics and my faves, Fistful of dollars, few dollars more and Good, Bad and the ugly (although I know these arent a follow on story... before someone has a go, but the writer had the same character (that Clint plays) in mind for these three films, so it is classed as a trilogy as such.)

I would love to read your comparison of the book and screenplay... I've yet to read the book...

I don't really like either of them. The trilogy is full of too much heavy handedness and no actual payoff. To quote Peter Griffin "it insists on itself"

I bought the box set a while back. There's

I have to say the second is the best out of all tree, Al pacino really shines in this one, but as a whole the trilogy is one of the best films ever.

anyone ever watched in one sitting? I did! :D

I thought one and two were equally brilliant but have never been able to get to the end of three. I think Francis Ford Coppolla's daughter was miscast as Michael's daughter and that lost a bit of authenticity for me. Picky, I know :)
