Gmail configuration on Nokia N97?

Hi all,

Last week I purchased a Nokia N97. I love the phone. I would like to get alerts when new E-Mails arrive to my gmail. But I do not want to download the mails to my phone. How do I set the phone to my requirement.

Also I would like to display the alert in my home screen.
