Well, hold off there. That's not quite the whole truth.

The fact is that of the billions upon billions given to GM, only some $6 billion of it was considered debt. The other $50 billion or so was considered investment; i.e. we the people all own a piece of GM. So GM is paying off the 1/10th of the bailout that was deemed to be repayable debt.

We the people are still out the other $50 billion or so.
