The large wire that is tightened to the stud with a nut is supposed to go directly to the battery positive.
One of the smaller wires goes to an ignition "on" source. The alternator works only when this wire is powered, also called the field.
The other small wire goes to the battery gauge or light.
All the above can be easily verified with a test light.

i need help with my alternator wiring. where are the wires with the plastic plug-ins supposed to go to, and on the back of my alternator the wire goes from the alternator, splices into another wire which runs into the cab, then to the battery. is that correct or could that be draining/not charging my battery? i had my alternator tested and its good
