Giving advice for saddlebag installation on C50

Remove the bolt closer to the front of the bike first and replace with the saddlebag frame and new screw. TRUST ME! The front has a permanent/fixed bolt attached to the bike. If you just loosen the back bolt first (which needs a wrench to hold the nut in place), it'll take the front bolt holes out of alignment when you remove it's bolt, and it was impossible to get the new bolt in. The back bolt has a removable nut so it has more play (since you can slide the nut onto the bolt). The first side caused a lot of grief, but the other side was a breeze to do once the lesson was learned.

If you do happen to loosen the back bolt first, go ahead and remove the bolt completely, then remove the front one and attach it's frame bolt first, THEN attach the back one. Even though the directions clearly state NOT to remove both bolts, I had to once I mucked with the back one first.

What should have been a simple 10 minute task took almost 45 minutes!

But I love these saddlebags! They're from USSADDLEBAG.COM.

So easy to remove, and put back on.

Hey CC,

Thanks for the tips and pix! I've got some questions for you:

  1. Did you buy the bags from the manufacturer or from an online store?
  2. How much total [bags, brackets, shipping etc.] did it cost?
  3. Is the actual leather quality as good as it shows at their website?
  4. Did you get the standard size or the large ones [the clearance between the exh. pipe and the bag looks good]
Believe it or not, your posting came just in time when my wife and I were checking the bags.

The Ussaddlebag guys only sell the quick release bags themselves. They do allow others to sell their throw-over bags.

I paid $543 (all said and done) for the classic style! Kinda pricey but the quality is amazing. And they come off in just a few seconds with minimal effort. I also love that they hold their shape. Most other bags I've seen get all droopy, and just look kinda sloppy (imo)... so it's worth a few extra dollars. Plus they sit right up on the bike since they don't use those add-on spacers.

And, yep, the quality of the leather is just like they say. You should smell them. :) The real McCoy.

I say go for it. You can't be dissapointed with these guys.

You should come and visit your family and friends soon. Oh, by the way, bring the bike so I can get a better look at those saddle bags, I can't decide what kind to get.
 
I had to just go ahead and remove the back bolt also even though I thought there might be a chance that I might not get it all lined up again. But once the front one was in place, the back one just slid right on in since it doesn't have a permanent nut.

So, yes, I could have said to just go ahead and remove both bolts, but I'm not too sure that I didn't just get lucky with the ease that they went back in. I did the other side one bolt at a time (front one first) like the instructions said to do, and had no problems what so ever.

Andre, I am loving these bags! Great quality, and aesthetics (that means they look good :).

I'm booked till the middle of August! Zero weekends for Ernie. :( But it's not like you have that much free time on your hands either. And I'd have to get a wind shield before making such a long trip (any ideas on what I should get?).

I just ordered some engine guards today. They should be in next week! And I have two trips next month (Boston and Chicago) so I'm kinda watching where my money goes.
 
I guess you were. My instructions just said to remove the bolts and replace them with the new ones. When Itryed it on the left side the front hole misalighned. I did it one bolt at a time on the right side and it took about 5 minutes to install the bracket. Unfortunately I have been working all week and haven't had ttime to fool with it much. Today I am going to try to get that last bolt in again.
 
I'm looking at the Memphis Shades fats, they have a no tools quick release option, I don't know if they make it for my bike yet.

Saddlebag dimensions:
18" wide x 13" tall x 7 1/2" deep.
Large capacity saddlebag dimensions:
18" wide x 13" tall x 8 3/4" deep.
Large capacity saddlebags are $75 more than our standard bags.

The specs are different from what is shown on the drawings at one of the links above.
 
I guess they could be if you don't take them off. LOL.

But I got these for the ease of removing them when i take it out for "overnight" stays.
