is there a difference between a handsome looking guy and a cute looking guy?

I am 18 and tall, I am 6 foot 3. No girls have ever told me to my face that I am "cute" but they have said it over facebook or IM or they have told their girl friends who then have told me.

but most older people call me "handsome/good looking".

do these two words basically mean the same thing?
