What phone should she get for me that is either unavaliable in the states or in the states that would be a great to replace my w800? I would love a pda phone, but I haven't really found one that I fancy. Any good mp3 or camera phones worth drooling over?

Damn i want the moto q but its not out in gsm yet!

Well... if you're after a Sharp or Toshiba phone, those are readily avilable in Shanghai, if that's where your girlfriend's going- I personally recommend the V903SH or the V904T. Both have excellent capabilities in terms of camera and MP3. Note- the Sharp has optical zoom, and the Toshiba does not. If you're not into getting a Japanese phone, then I would recommend a Pantech phone- the PG-8000 is a good idea.

If you want a qwerty form, you can probably check out the Nokia E70. Otherwise, the Samsung E900 looks like a cool phone. I think it will be pretty rare in the US.

Just a warning- it seems that (in my experience) you still have to go to import shops within China to get the N80 or the E61. I was once quoted over 5000RMB for the N80, and I can't find the E61 (I am living in Shanghai), so just make sure that you can afford the phone you want, and that you can find it.

You're on cingular and you still get good reception with a triband only phone? (Sony w800i)

I second the motion on a samsung SGH-E900, its like the LG chocolate but with a lot more features.

Whast the difference between e900 and the n80? seems like the nokia has a lot more features like text messaging, 3g, and better camera.

basically all phones have text messaging capabilities as far as I know. 3G is useless in the states right now, since North America doesn't have 3G, the better camera might be worth it though.

my brother is in shanghai right now, he just got a nokia 6111 for about $120(US), seems like middle tier phones like that (thats pretty high for a middle tier but you see my point) are the ones you'll be able to save the most $$ on. I was trying to get him to buy like 5 or 6 more to resell on ebay here, but he a) doesnt have the room in bags, etc b) the $$ to lay out and c) doesnt want to mail them to me (moron)

My experience is that almost every phone is more expensive in mainland China than the USA or elsewhere. Hong Kong is the place to pick up the latest phones at better prices. Sharp phones are imported from HK or Japan if found on the mainland. I believe the Q is available in GSM in both mainland China and HK, but don't quote me on that. I haven't been there in a few months.

For example. I picked up the LG G262 for just about US$256, but on the mainland the same exact phone was US$437.00.

Also, somethimes phones on the mainland are stripped the phones of some advanvced features on the mainland (wi-fi in particular). HK is the place to buy a phone for personal use that is new and perhaps not available in North America. Just make sure it is 100% new when you get it. Make sure they cut the seals on the box in front of you.

^what he said. You can get phones for really cheap in Hong Kong, especially if you're willing to look into the "shadier" dealers. Caveat emptor, of course.

It does not exist in GSM yet, not on the mainland, it seems (I've looked all over Shanghai for one when I heard that, but it does not exist). If you're looking for an alternative, though, I can't suggest anything, because I'm mostly into Japanese phones. But, if your girllfriend gets a chance to go to HK, DEFINITELY buy from there. Cheaper and more variety are the strongest reasons.
-All right, I'm out of advice now.-

Okay, what phone on ebay right now is the closest to the motorola q in portability wise? I would really love a qwerty board in a slim form factor.

You may wnat to try the Samsung i320-basically a Q copy.

Supposedly launching in France soon - I hope:http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2006/06/14/samsung-launches-sgh-i320-in-france/
