Girl Talk

I can't believe there hasn't been a single Girl Talk thread on here all year.

Girl Talk, for those who live under very large rocks, is a mash-up DJ who released Night Ripper earlier this year and a few months later got hyped by Pitchfork. The album is great, and the two times I've seen him live have been the most fun shows I've ever been to. Even if he only played for about 9 minutes the second time, because he invited everyone up onstage at a festival and security cut him off. :D

Check him out.

Not that great; single most overhyped electronic act this year. I completely blame Pitchfork. This is dance music for hipster scum.

First off, all the Girl Talk hype came about last year, so calling him the most overhyped this year doesn't really fit. Bullshit like Dan Deacon and whatever is the worst anyway.

Besides, it's basically impossible to dance to unless you hear it live, and it's not like he's the first hipster to make a mash-up. 2 Many DJs, Party Ben, etc. have been doing it for years, it's not like Girl Talk just invented some new form of dance music.

And in terms of "dance music for hipster scum," this is really no worse than listening to Ed Banger RecorRAB or any of that. It's all the same kiRAB listening to it pretending they know shit about EDM.

The hype started last year, which means it took til this year for the hipsters to get ahold of it. Not only are Girl Talk's albums bland and lacking depth, I've heard from several frienRAB that his live act isn't anything to write home about.

The scene must be different where you're from, but the majority of kiRAB here who listen to Girl Talk know nothing of Ed Banger, or any electro-house outfits with the exception of Daft Punk and Justice.

ps: At least Dan Deacon has an original sound; no other electronic artist sounRAB like him. Girl Talk can't even compose his own music.

Maybe things are different in Boston, but Girl Talk isn't anymore popular here than he was last year. And yeah, anything that's highly blogged about and danceable gets lumped into the same scene. It's the same kiddies selling out Girl Talk shows and Justice ones.

Dan Deacon isn't any more original or interesting than any other bedroom IDM producer, I could find a million guys on Myspace who sound just like him. He just sells himself as this really wacky guy making totally wacky music that hipsters just eat up.

And pre-Night Ripper Girl Talk did make his own Glitch beats, and it's not like Night Ripper didn't take him any effort. IIRC it took him over a year to put all the samples together, etc.

i'm not saying it didn't take work; i know it took a lot of effort to mash the samples, especially considering the extensiveness of the ones he used.

my two problems with Girl Talk are:

1. I can't get into his music
2. Everyone seems to think he is the savior of EDM, along with Justice. Meanwhile, respectable artists like Milanese and Distance go under the radar

I don't know anyone that considers Girl Talk the savior of EDM, and most people who call Justice EDM's saviors are clueless enough where it's easy to not take them seriously. Most of it is just hyperbole from people who probably said the same thing about LCD SounRABystem and other dance/rock groups.

Milanese and Distance are, along with Skream, Burial, and a few others, some of Dubstep's most recognizable names. I know both their albums got quite a bit of hype and critical acclaim even outside of the Dubstep scene, but I don't follow it too closely.
