Gibbons: "Superman needs re-imagining"

Here.

And I suppose I agree with him. The one thing that worried me so much was this idea that he should be made darker like Batman, because to me that's an easy solution, but completely off the mark for Supes. All Hollywood's superheroes are dark now, and to be honest I'm a bit bored of it. The approach to Superman should always be optimistic and from the heart. It's what worked for the comics, and what worked for Donner. That doesn't mean the character shouldn't be threatening or imposing however...

I love to see a new set of movies that take something like All-Star Superman as the inspiration. There's no way an audience is going to take yet another origin story, so this would be much better. And Singer's tribute was just too reverend by far for some (though I loved it). So it'd be much better to take this wonderful expansion of the mythos and put it on screen. Plus, I do feel it'd be cool to keep Brandon Routh in the role. He didn't do anything but shine in the role(s) for me, and as he's obviously a little older now he should be even more up to it.

Superman fans - your thoughts! :)

Yes they need to start again.... the last film wasn't very good. The casting didn't help. I don't agree about Routh tho - he has to be replaced. He was more wood than steel.

Unfortunately, I think Superman does need a origin story, as the film-makers are talking to an entirely new audience. I was speaking to someone just a few years younger than myself the other day (and I'm 21) and they don't remember the New Adventures of Superman!!!

I felt with Superman Returns that Bryan Singer was making a tribute to a film series that a lot of people hadn't seen.

I liked Superman Returns and I'm disappointed that version of the story isn't likely to be continued...but I realise I'm in a very small minority.

I've enjoyed the Superman universe and characters since childhood and it is close to my heart but I don't know if even I could be bothered to sit through yet another re-imagining of it at this point.

It's so disappointing that Bryan Singer's attempt to bring back Superman to the big screen failed so spectacularly because there should be a place for Superman in the movies, but it's a franchise people just don't seem that enthusiastic about anymore, for whatever reason. A great pity.

I personally think Superman Returns was underrated, although I could recognize the various flaws it had. The same cast and crew doing an origins story would've worked better IMO.

I agree.

As much as I enjoyed SR on a personal level, I think it was a big mistake to continue on from the first two films. It probably made anyone who didn't grow up watching the original franchise feel disconnected from the characters.

It was a very interesting idea but it was probably never going to work.

The only way it will work is if the film makers recognise the blandness of the character. Superman is pure 2D personality, the film should revolve around peoples interactions with him and not the character itself.

So go back to the primary colours ans stop trying to texture his costume and personality. He is the worlRAB ultimate boyscout let's see a film about how the word copes with him rather than how he copes with the world.

If you want characters with fully rounded personalities go to Marvel it doesn't work with Superman.

I thought the Lois and Clark tv series had a good idea in that they made the focus Clark Kent and not Superman. For the first two seasons the entire show revolved around Lois' frienRABhip with Clark and her crush on Superman was secondary to that. It made the moment Lois learned Superman's identity all the more powerful.

In the films, Lois has always treated Clark like crap and the focal point has always been Superman, not Clark, and it makes their whole romance look shallow because Superman is basically just a poster boy in the films. I'd like to see them reverse this like the tv show did because it makes Lois look like less of a bitch and Clark less of a caricature.

It could work in the right hanRAB, with the right script, and with the right cast.

eh? What was wrong with Superman returns? Thought it was good.

Dont agree with the poster above though, Superman DOES need to be made alot darker, almost like the new Batman series.

No, absolutely not. If you make Superman a darker character then it's not Superman anymore and although I lean toward the darker comic book characters, we've got more than enough of them out there as it is.

If the storyline is good enough there is no reason why a character like Superman can't have a film franchise. It's about finding the right script and the right director.

No more Superman films please! Superman Returns was toss, Kate Bosworth was an awful Lois, Brandon was ok, but it was just a waste of time. Plus I will never forgive Bryan Singer for abandoning the X-Men franchise to do that film!

Superman neeRAB to be brought into the 21st century not be stuck in the 1950s mould but still be the epitome of good - darker sounRAB like a really bad idea. There ought to still be a place for an unselfish hero. Making his enemies darker might work better. It did for Batman.

Not for a good long while, no. I don't know when it might be the right time to try again but certainly not in the near future. It's too bad but this franchise clearly isn't going to work right now.

I'm not a fan of movies that feature Superman. But i love the tv shows and cartoon's. I feel in the movies he is portrayed as an almighty god - Which he is. But i've always viewed him as a symbol. That represent's hope and goodness. It's Clark kent that lives among humans, and understanRAB their true value that i like. So therefore to make Superman a dark character would be a bad descion. For future movies i think they should focus on his hertiage and feature a enemy that can actually kill him.
