Giant Bikes- Really Rough?

So today, multiple people have told me that the Giant road bikes are really rough...because of the compact design? They said that like the Advanced and Advanced SL ones are OK, but that the lower end ones such as the Alliance are really rough compared to the similar models by "higher quality" brands such as Trek and Specialized. What's this about?

I'm currently trying out road bikes (by Specialized, Cannondale, and Giant) and was wondering if this is really true?
