Ghost in the Shell Question

So i figure I'd finally get into the series. However, before I can do this, I'm curious if there is any continuity. Do the anime series and films connect? Would I have to watch one of the movies first to understand what's happening in the anime or vice versa?

The first two GitS movies (the original and Innocence) and GitS: Stand Alone Complex (including Solid State Society) are two completely different stories from each other with no continuity or connection between the two.

Continuity 2: GiTS, GiTS 2.0 (aka GiTS remasted for HD), GiTS: Innocence
Continuity 3; GiTS: SAC, The Laughing Man (movie retelling of season 1), GiTS SAC 2nd Gig, Individual Eleven (retelling of season 2), Solid State Society

If you would happen to rent Innocence, try to get the recent Bandai release. The older disc has some subtitle problems.
