Ghost in the shell Character Designs

If anyone can shed some light on this and help me understand what ive been pondering about for the last two weeks, that would be great!

I started watching ghost in the shells first season, and i noticed that compared to the original movie, Major looks different.

Batoe and the chief have visually very close character designs and have kept true to their original personality forms. The major has a different appearence, and she is different in her personality.

Why is this? does the movie have anything to do with the series?

what character design have the major do you guys like more, i personally felt the the original one had more soul to her, and she was way more mysterious, cunning, and fit the show better!

Ghost in the Shell (the first movie) and it's sequel Ghost in the Shell Innocence are not part of the TV series. The two movies also are a lot different from the Manga in which they derived.
Those two movies are directed by Mamaru Oshii, of Patlabor and JinRoh (Keberos Saga) fame.
Many of his works are more cerebral, and slower paced.

Stand Alone Complex was a totally different take on the source work of the manga. You probably know it is followed by 2nd gig, and the movie Stand Alone Complex.
Although just as thought provoking the action is a tad bit more. It had different designs based of the manga, and the music, directors and writers are pretty much all changed.

What is funny is how different the manga is to the two main films, and also the subsequent TV series and it's movie, yet they all are still threaded in a way.
In each one of them they have some part of a story that revolves around what exactly makes you human, and at some point has a villian with "puppet" in the name.

Sorry this is long. Hope it helps.

Its ok, its great that you posted all that info!

I was thinking that if you watch the original movie, it takes a couple viewings to grasp the true concept!

If you watch the series's first then the movies you can truly peice them together!

they couldnt start out with major after the original movie, because she is a new being, she is corabined with the puppet master.

So after the series, if you watch the movies, you can peice it together that way!

the series is alot of info, and background history of each character, the movies dont explain. As you travel into watching the movies after having prior knowledge that came from the series you can really enjoy the movies more and put it all together. The ending of the series being the innoscence movie

this is what i think, if any1 has another opinion, please share it with us

Yeah, you could think of it that way, but it's pretty much official that the series and the movies take place in alternate universes. Kind of like the Ultimate Spider-Man books vs the "regular" Spider-Man series, to grab a superhero reference.

Interesting idea Mister Miracle. It could work, but it would have some pretty big plot holes to hurdle through.

An Example being; Tougusa finally starts getting implants(Artificial parts) at the beginning of Solid State Society.
He had very little throughout all the TV and other movies (even Innocence) He was more or less considered a "natural" That is why The Major chose him to round out Section 9. Obviously moving up, to being in charge of such a dangerous and demanding section, required him to go prosthetic.
So, if you were to figure that in, Solid State Society would be the farthest movement in time of any of the versions.

totally, I must have seen it 2 times at the indie theater (I used to go to) when it came out. Then when it was released on VHS, I saw it a couple more to get the full scope.

I have yet to see the newly revamped version of the original movie, that has new scenes and enhanced graphics added.
Ghost in the Shel 2.0

Anyhow, I love GITS Discussion. I thank you for bringing it up mate.

I'm torn on this one. The first movie was originally how I was exposed to Gits. But the series more reserables the source material(the manga). I don't think I can choose because the character designs fit so well with their individual interpretations of the story. The series being more action packed and the movies being more thought provoking.

I've always preferred the series to the movies. There's just more there. The music by Kanno-san is better and there's a much greater and epic story at work.

The movies are great, but there's slightly more humor and more of the spirit of Shirow's manga in the series.

I think the first movie especially is pretty overrated.

True, The designs fit the reality level. It is almost better not to compare them. More like look at them for different entertainment value.

And I would agree with TheVileOne, the TV was better, but the movies are fun for different reasons. Innocence was very cool to see. It was eye poping on the big screen and followed my favorite character Batou more, which is a plus in my book.
That said I have definitely seen the TV series more. probably 3 times both the first season and 2nd gig.

Thanks man, i love ghost in the shell, i didnt know that the movie 2.0 has more scenes, i will have to pick that one up, thanks for letting me know. Maybe with the new scenes it is a bit more clear watching the movie the first time around.

I do agree with you about the plot holes, well i was thinking, a person could still be a natural even if he gets modified arms and legs or modified parts. As long as his brain isnt cybernetically modified.

i dont know about you, but i wished there was some sort of an "official tye in with the series and the movies" ive always felt like that was something that was left untouched" im sure they could have finished off second gig, with some references to the puppet master. or even had another series that lead up to the eventually ghost in the shell movie. i mean how strong of a villian the puppet master is, he makes the laughing man look like a amatuer, and actual AI living on the net. wow

but...................... i can just keep dreaming

Wel,l are you ready for a live action adaption?

Dreamworks bought the rights and have looked into making a 3-D version of it.

Now I am not holding my breath; this news is over a year old, so we will see if it even happens, but if any of these other movie adaptions of our anime faves Akira and Bebop, do well, you know your going to see this actually be made.
