Ghost Dances
Christopher Bruce
1981
Christopher Bruce's Ghost Dances is based around the political issue of Pinochet's regime in which many people were tortured and killed for being too outspoken. The dance consists of 11 dances, 3 males, 5 females and 3 male ghosts. The costume of ghost dances provides different ones for each people in the dance. The Ghosts wear skull masks, body makeup; skeletons, loin cloth and trailing scraps of material; ethereal looking eerie. This gives off the effect of the ghost to make them look deadly and scary towards the audience. The dead wear ragged clothing; cottens everyday dress, Realistic; suggests people who have suffered disintegrating material lives. The advantages are the clothes are easy to move in and it doesn’t restrict movement of arms and legs. Dead and ghost clearly distinguished. The disadvantages are the masks the ghost dancers wear could get to hot whilst dancing which leads to ability to see, and it adds weight to the head. The lighting enchances all the action it highlights details the audience is meant to notice and pick up on towards the dance. It gives you an impression of a shadowy place made gloomier by use of green light when the ghosts are active. The light is brought to the stage to shine on the much happier times the dead had, the memories, rather than the miserable dead times which are dim and dark. The set design is the helping of understanding the actual dance. It’s set on a stage, with a back drop of rocky terrain & the ghosts land. Rocky Andean location, Mountain peaks are around the set also, with an opening of a cave. The design does not intrude with the dance space, so the ghost dance don’t have limited area, to dance only, plus there is only one set. The colours are mainly dark; grey, blue & green. Bleak situation, with no escape.
