getting water to boil at a camp fire?

why is it that when i hold a pot over open flame the water will not boil. The pot is actually in the flame.

Yet, if I put the same pot of water on top of a grill that has hot coals underneath, the water will boil.

what is going on?
 
The pot is too close to the base of the flame where full combustion has not taken place. Cool air is moving in to feed the flames and taking heat away from the pot. Higher up, where combustion is more comlete, the flame is hotter and able to heat the pot and the water.
 
The flame will burn the metal since the metal abosrbs heat but when you put in on hot coals, it will boil
