...avoid damage? I'm planning on replacing the factory speakers installed in my 97 Thunderbird. I already have an after-market radio installed (15w x 4 RMS). I plan on getting an amplifier along with the speakers to get maximum clarity.
Now..the speakers I plan on getting (Alpine SPR-57C or Polk Audio MM571) are 300 watts peak 100W RMS a piece.
For now I just want to replace my front speakers, and rear speakers later.
If I get a 1200 watt amp (that's what I need for all 4, right? Or should I get an amp that has 400 Watts RMS and not worry about peak being under/over 1200?), wouldn't that be overpowering my front speakers (before I get the new rear speakers) and cause damage?

forget PEAK power ratings-- they mean nothing. If you are just getting an amp for your speakers, no subwoofers, get a good 4 channel amp.

anywhere from 35x4 watts RMS to 100x4 watts RMS is PLENTY for interior speakers. We are talking about REAL true watts here. 100x4 real real watts will cause hearing damage at full blast for prolonged periods in most cases.

Many cheap flea market brand amps inflate their power ratings, and people are fooled. Look at a good four channel amp--- you get what you pay for. Just leave the rear 2 channels of the amp unplugged until you get new rear speakers, and keep the rear speakers running off the head unit. (until you get new ones, then power them with the amp)
