Start writing.
That was easy. I mean that you should take whatever chance you get to work on your writing and reporting. Is there a school newspaper? Is there a Web site for school sports, either through the school or separately? Work on anything you can, if only to see if you like it. Your local newspaper may be looking for interns or freelance work.
You can take the same approach at college. There are communication schools at many universities, so you should be looking at those schools in the next year or so. The usual suspects -- Northwestern, Missouri, Syracuse -- are good choices.
Best advice I can give -- be sure you like it. It's a tough field, and there are tons of journalists out on the street looking for work right now.
Good luck.
