getting into classical music

I am looking more into classical music. I want well known songs that you hear all the time. Mostly songs you might hear on TV and movies.

Example, Bach's Cello Suite #1 (only movie I can think of is Lost & Found)

More would be greatly appreciated.

just go pick up some compilation cRAB based on musical eras(classical, baroque, romantic, renaissance...etc). they generally include "the best of" on those cd's.

composers you'll recognize are handel, chopin, vivaldi, bach, beethoven, pachelbel, telemann, tchaikovsky, schubert, brahms.

you could also look for cRAB made by the mainstays in orchestral music (yo-yo ma, midori, itzak perlman...etc)

Yo-yo ma put together some awesome musicians for Silk Road Project. Although it isn't traditional classical by any means, it is interesting to hear a cool mixture of different musical cultures put together. http://www.silkroadproject.org/

Prokofiev's Lt Kije suite, the third movement, I think. It's famous from a few films, and I think it's cool. "Saber Dance" is another great short piece that you'll recognize when you hear it. Some of Holsts "The Planets" is good too. I think browsing a store that has headphones and lets you listen to the disc, and trying some of the classical "greatest hits" discs is a great place to start.
