Getting a new phone? T-mobile Need an answer ASAP?

About 6 months ago i got a blackberry flip, i was happy with it until i saw newer phones which caught my attention. I was wondering if i could just buy a new phone and sort-of restart from the beginning, Or if there is a huge process involved which includes paying extra fees.
 
If you don't have a plan, you can just switch whenever you want for no extra cost. If you have a plan, it's 175$ to cancel it early. Most plans last 2 years so unless you want to pay 175$ cancelation fee, you'll just have to wait a year and a half.
