getting a divorce but can't afford a lawyer. should i risk filling for it on my own?

During the mariage I was the only one who had a steady job and all the assets and liabilites are under my name, except for the car my ex is currently driving. The divorce should be simple because I believe he is not going to hire a lawyer either. He doesnt speak good english to even appear in court to defend himself. The assets are not really enough to cover all the debts under my name so it is not worthy to spend a couple of thousands on a lawyer. Any suggestions...please?
 
If you can't afford a lawyer I would go to the library or barnes and noble and look for books about divorcing without an attorney.
