Get an N80 or Keep My Dash

Hey folks,

I need some advice, I've never owned a Nokia Smartphone and I'm really debating if I should get rid of my Dash for a N80. So I have a few questions,

1) how do I play videos on an N80, I saw that it only played 3gp and mp4, on my Dash I watch all video files, ie. wmv, avi, mpeg, more common file types.

2) How easy is UI on a Nokia instead of a Windows based phone, I've only had experience with Smartphones with Windows.

3) should I just wait for the N95 until I venture into the Nokia world.

4) how is the wifi, I use that a lot on the Dash and it's great.

5) Does it have MSN messenger on it, I use this a lot on the Dash while on wifi.

I use my phone primarily as a phone, but I do use the Wifi quite a bit and also use it as a Video player when I'm travelling or bored.

Any input would be great. Thanks in Advance. I did do a search but I couldn't really grasp what people were talking about.

A: You can use a movie converter program from www.makayama.com which will convert any file type and send the movie file to your phone. It can play near-dvd quality movies.

2) How easy is UI on a Nokia instead of a Windows based phone, I've only had experience with Smartphones with Windows.
A: I don't have much experience with the Windows based OS except on a Moto MPX200. The symbian speed isn't blazing fast, but it's decent.

3) should I just wait for the N95 until I venture into the Nokia world.
A: You may want to wait for the N95, but who knows when it'll be available. Everyone keeps on hearing a different date. If you have the patience (and the pocketbook), wait for the n95 as it looks like a truly promising device.

4) how is the wifi, I use that a lot on the Dash and it's great.
A: I haven't had any issues with wifi on the n80, I used it primarily for chat and checking IMAP e-mail with the built in mail client.

5) Does it have MSN messenger on it, I use this a lot on the Dash while on wifi.
A: The phone does not come pre-loaded with MSN messenger, but you can download it off the net for your phone. I had it on my n80 before and it worked wonderfully. Do a google search and you'll find it.

Hope this helped somewhat!

Play using Smart Movie Player

UI is the best on Symbian!

You can wait for N95.. if you prefer 5MP camera with Auto Focus, buit in GPS, 3.5mm built in adaptor & willing to spend over $700

However N80ie(Internet Edition) will be as good as N95. However camera in this is not the best. But takes decent pics. You can use this as a GPS with a bluetooth GPS receiver.

wifi is the best on this!!

5) Does it have MSN messenger on it, I use this a lot on the Dash while on wifi.

3rd party application can be added.

I would say go for N80ie!

I think I can answer some of your questions a bit better since I've used more features on it than Slickmoto has.

1. There are several options for watching movies on an N80. SmartMovie is $30 (or as Rcadden says, 10 minutes worth of Googling) and comes with its own converter. There's also a Divx player which is free and you can convert movies with Super, which is also free. The N80's screen makes videos beautiful.

2. The s60 UI is by far the easiest to use in the smartphone world. It's not something to learn like Blackberry's or Windows Mobile, but its ready to use right out of the box. The only thing to "learn" is the advanced stuff, and even that you can do yourself by fiddling around enough.

3. I don't know, should you? I'd say no, because if the N95 is your first s60 and it ends up being buggy as hell from the initial firmware (which is to be expected) you'll end up not liking s60 or flooding the forums with questions that you wouldn't have with a solid N80. If you get an N80 now, you can always sell it for the N95 when it comes out.

4. The wifi on the N80 is excellent. It's probably the same speed for rendering times as your Dash.

5. I've never used MSN Messenger, but I remember seeing at least 3 different 3rd party applications for it on various sites. By that alone, I'm sure there's something out there that's suitable.

Any more questions before your purchase?

I don't really have answers for your questions, though I have used an n80 and was not a big fan of it. The phone is great in terms of look, functionality and feel. But the battery life was dismal. Now it could have just been the one I had but even without the use of WiFi I was just getting over a day of battery life. And I did all the recommended tips to increase battery life but not much helped. I finally switched to the N73 and have loved it since.

From what I've heard, the battery life on the N80 has increased significantly due to some of the newer firmwares, though this is only what I've heard. Can any N80 owners back this up?
