Germany and Hasselhoff

I had no clue where to put this thread but anyways I was just wondering if anyone knows why many Germans have a strong affection to David Hasselhoff. I think it might have something to do with his presence at the tearing down of the Berlin wall but I am not sure. If anyone has any ideas go ahead.....
