LPR is often called "silent reflux". You can be refluxing regularly without really even knowing it. Most of the time with LPR, you won't have any heartburn type symptoms. The acid comes up into the throat so quickly that it doesn't always cause any symptoms or damage in the esophagus. Sore throat, coughing and trouble swallowing are all reflux symptoms though. It takes very little acid to cause a lot of irritation in the throat. Not all doctors actually diagnose LPR. Frequently they just lump everything under GERD.
I have extremely severe reflux, verified through the Barium testing, pH monitoring and Manometry. I never had heartburn though. In my case, it was lung irritation causing a chronic cough and trouble breathing.
If it is LPR that you have, typically you need to take PPI's twice a day to really see any relief.
