Hello my name is constantine 1 year ago I've been diagnosed with GERD and I had esophagitis at stage 2 or something like this. My doctor prescribed me with PPI drugs lansprazol. I took the pill dose of 30mg twice a day one morning second before sleep for half year. then when my esophagitis became better doc told me move on 1 pill of 30mg only at morning.
I dont expirience any side effects by now its almost 1 year.

So a month ago I read about its all long term side effects and that the PPI drugs are not completely studied for long time use. and I was scared and shocked!!

So I wanted to drop em off like stupied im 18 by the way.
So I started not taking the pill everyday and I felt bloating lot of acid and dirhea and lot lot of uncomfortable feeling at stomak.

I was so scared I started taking them again 30mg a day.
Then I only heard about the rebound effect from my doc...

I tried taking the same drug but only 15mg a day 2 weaks ago and i could feel the difference of 30mg and 15mg because of little bloating and little more acid.

Now im stuck with this 1pill at morning and I feel bad because I cant stop them and I feel this disease is not for me im too young for this damn...

Whenever I dont eat for long period of time I feel some acid come up to my throat,And when I eat big meal I feel good and no acid reflux and very comfortable and relaxed.

I dont have acid reflux at night.

I scare of long term side effects and want to stop drugs but dont know how!! help!!

I also remerabered that I had ear inflmation 1 year ago and I took AntioBiotics for it and than after the antiobiotics period its 2weaks I
started having acid reflux!!! Could it be the cause of it??? because I totaly remeraber now I started having acid reflux after this strong antibiotics for 2 weaks!!!

If it is the cause of it what can I do its already 1year on PPI??

HELPPPP IM ALMOST CRYYY THIS EATS ME INSIDE MY HEAD!!!

Hi Constantine:

If I read your post correctly, you are eighteen. Many of the long term side effects of PPI use are related to bone loss in older people (like me). Therefore, I don't think you have to worry a great deal right now because you have to take your PPI medicine daily for now. My suggestion would be to supplement with calcium (even though you are young) to make sure you are building a good supply of calcium in your bones for the future.

Once your reflux is under control, then you may be able to slowly lower the dose or switch to another type of acid controller, such an an H2 blocker. They are less effective at blocking acid but they also do not interfere as much with nutrient absorption.

Since you are so young, you have a lot of time to do research and experiment with your diet to minimize reflux and perhaps the need for a high dose of PPI.

I guess my message to you is to not be alarmed. Taking the medicine when you need it is really important. I think there are ways to slowly step down the PPI, but it must be done slowly to avoid damage and rebound.

I started a thread on quitting PPI's and acid rebound because I decided to stop taking my PPI in January. But I want to make sure other people who may need to be on the medicine don't feel compelled to quit because of what I posted. Not everyone who takes a PPI develops osteopenia due to calcium malabsorption like I did. Mine was a personal decision based on a specific circumstance which may never happen to you.

Therefore, don't panic because you are taking a PPI. Read all you can here and elsewhere and then you can slowly experiment with the idea of cutting back on the PPI or taking a different acid suppressor if you still need one. Also, please check with your doctor. But, above all, don't panic. You are not putting poison in your body and the benefit you are deriving from the medication right now outweighs the potential side effects. But I agree, these are not medications that were designed to be taken forever and we are just beginning to find out about long term use side effects.

Thanks for reply rose!!

I thought that the antibiotics could cause my GERD, so I tried strong probiotics the probiotics course is now at end and I dont really feel difference so I guess its not the antibiotics.
I tried Apple Cider Vineger its made me feel so badd I was spiting acid.
I dont think that I have hernia because my doc who put camera inside me didnt mention this and said I have weak LES and not hernia.

When I was a kid my eating habits were very bad, I didnt chew food.
I remeraber nights in my childhood which I spent on vomitting food I ate during the day which were unchewed at alll!!

This maybe somehow made the LES wide open for unchewed food, is this theory stupied or can be the real cause?
I also have a theory that if I chew the food till it liquid and then swallow the
LES will with the time get more tight and work easier?? and it will improve GERD??

Lately was thinking about the absorbtion problems that PPI can cause so I did blood chek
I got the results. i'll go to my doc this week to see whats up with my nutriens.

I also suffered from muscle lose because at age 14 to 16 I grew 40cm of height and became real skinny.

Now I am 18 Very active and gained good ammount of muscle with 1 year on PPI.
for some reason at the first 3 month with PPI my absorbtion is increased!!
Never Cheked the absorption rate again gota do it to see whats goin on

My doc says continue taking PPI and with the age when phyisical changes will stop maybe the LES muscle tone will be somehow restored?

Any reply will be appreciated!!

My suggestion is to eat healthy and eat things that are alkaline and soothing to your gut. I like almond milk, coconut juice. I also supplement with DGL and aloe vera juice. There is some research that suggests that a low carbohydrate diet also helps tone down reflux. You are going to have to experiment and cut out things that produce reflux.

If the PPI is working, then my suggestion is to stay on them for now and, once you feel better, have gained weight and your symptoms are under control, then you can experiment trying to very slowly wean yourself off them.

As I wrote earlier, do not stress over having to be on a PPI right now. Take good care of yourself, eat a healthy diet and hopefully all these health issues will come under better control. Hope you feel better soon.
