Hi I am a 36 year old teacher who has had problems with my throat/breathing/anxiety for the last year. All my problems started when i got a promotion at work and had a minor operation which i got really worked up about for no reason. Anyway the symptoms i have are horsevoice, constant throat clearing, a lump in throat, shortness of breath feeling a bit wheezy. I originally thought all my problems were linked to acid reflux (never had any heartburn tho) but when i had a ph test done it came back negative. I also took 3 lots of antaciRAB but nothing happened. I tried an inhaler for my breathing which didnt do anything and most recently i have visited a ENT doctor who looked down my throat and said there was no sign of acid reflux irritation just muscle tension dysphonia due to anxiety. What i want to know is can all these symptoms really be due to anxiety??if so has anyone any ideas of treatment?? if not as anyone any other ideas what can be causing my symptoms?? I am starting to go insane with all the research and noone seems to be able to help me or know whats wrong. Please reply :-) I was no thinking it might be allergy related as it seems to be worse when i have caffine but is that because caffine makes anxiety worse??.

Your symptoms do sound like they could be acid reflux. It's frustrating if your doctors aren't finding anything.

What type of pH test did you have? Most just do the probe above the LES. If you have LPR though, you'd get more accurate readings with a probe above your UES. Not many ENT's do that procedure though. My ENT just started doing that test a few years ago.

I have GERD, allergies, asthma, myofacial pain, and cervicalgia that all have overlapping kinRAB of pain.

Just this past week, I had confirmation from another specialist for something else that can also have your symptoms. TMJ may be something else you want to consider. If you look at the TMJ board at the top is a sticky that gives TMJ Symptoms. Many of your symptoms are on that list. During my visit with my TMJ specialist this week, he suggested that my problems started not long after I had unrelated surgery. He said when they intubate for the procedures they aren't gentle and it can cause/aggrevate TMJ. Ironically, I don't have jaw pain. My pain resonates in my ear and face muscles. I'd recommending doing a little research into that area.

If you are having muscle issues, you might benefit from trying a Certified Manual Physical Therapist. I found one that did wonders helping do releases on my facial muscles. My TMJ Specialist also recommended that I pursue seeing a chiropractor who specializes in working with the first and second vertabre.

Thanks for your reply. I did have a PH test done just above the LES I think and when I went to the ENT consultant she looked at my voicebox and said there was no inflamation, my throat looked healthy apart from the fact that I have muscle dysponia they said is a secondary cause of anxiety. Apparently there is no cure apart from cognative therapy. I am still not sure about that diagnosis really. Would I really feel like something is stuck in my throat, constant need to swallow and astma type symptoms from anxiety??? These symptoms are now constant as well so they dont just come and go anymore. I have had an astma test done and it came back negative so it cant be that. I am stuck really and not sure where to go next.
