No sh*t Einstein.
I never knew what a director did before. Thanks for that education.
The director also has a major say in casting. Actually, Lucas isn't so awful at this part of the job. He often chooses excellent actors. But then why does he elicit such awful performances from so many of them?
Oh, by the way, the best directors don't actually "tell the actors how to interpret their roles". Most actors would balk at that. But then, that's not an issue with Lucas since he doesn't seem to communicate anything to his actors during the shooting process.
Another excellent point made by another poster is that Lucas doesn't seem to be very good at choosing shots on the hoof - hence the constant tinkering and re-shoots. Since he isn't kow-towing to a studio there is no reason for this other than Lucas makes mistakes during the shooting process.
But then, as Stuart keeps reminding us, he knows FAR more about this whole subject than I do. So I wonder if he could tell us why he thinks Lucas is a great director. And no, pointing to box office receipts won't suffice...
Oh, and by the way, determining length of shots is the job of the editor. The composition of the shots is the job of the DOP. But you surely knew this, since you're such an expert.
