George Gently bad recast?

Gently is a superb programme, with fine acting, a fine script. Its one of the best programmes around.

After 3 yrs, does it really matter that Shaw isnt talking like a Cockernee stall merchant?. God people complain about anything!.

Sit back and enjoy a damn good British programme and stop whinging.

Apologies for any offence caused, 'twas a late night post possibly badly phrased. But my original question still stanRAB - what on earth gives you the impression that Frost is in any way similar to Del-Boy? What mannerisms and characteristics do they share?

"Liking" Martin Shaw doesn't make him a good actor, he's rubbish in this.
It is possible even for an "average" actor to master accents if they're prepared to put in the work, he obviously wasn't, or hadn't the ability.

I used to watch Frost and I would say the excess of jokiness in later series had unwelcome echoes of OFAH. Not in a specific way, more a case of the writers letting Jason

Homosexuality was legalised in England and Wales in 1967. It wasn't until 1980 that it was legalised in Scotland, and Northern Ireland followed in 1982.

But I ask again - what in your opinion makes Warren Clarke unconvincing playing a homosexual? I found him perfectly convincing and I'm interested to know why you felt he was wrong for the part. It's a perfectly civil question; no truncheon of righteousness involved!

I'm glad that homosexuality is now compulsory, must have been a nightmare for the police to enforce when it was illegal (as they showed in this programme).

I thought both Shaw and Collins were good in The Proffesionals ...why not bring Collins Iinto IGG itll be interesting hearing Collins in a geordie accent ! :)

Outside of the anachronsims and the elastic geography, just what were the Police guarding at the beginning. One look through the gates of Swan Hunters and outside of one van and the odd Navy type, there was nothing.

Absolutely nothing.

A damning indictment of the failure of successive governments certainly, but a bit of a mistake by the production company. All it needed was a bigger van, closer to the gate and it would've hidden the fact that the Police were guarding wasteland.

That's not true - that is the urban myth.

The truth is he is proud of the Professionals and the huge part it has played in his life - he feels he has moved on and his objection to the repeats was due to no one getting any contractual repeat fees which he felt they were due.

I believe wasteland is a fast disappearing and valuable resource and deserves all the protection from scummy students that our brave Boys in Blue can muster, Mister.

Off topic, anyone seen the film 'The Boys in Blue'? That'll get rid of the blockage!

It was illegal until 1967. It then became legal to participate in homosexual acts in one's own home, though it was still illegal in public premises (including hotels), for anyone under 21, or for members of the armed forces. There have been further amendments since.

Homosexuality in itself was not illegal in Britain - not since 1861. It was the the act (anything between 2 males) that was illegal in 1966. Even 20th century Britain was not as bad as Nazi Germany.

The reason Bacchus and co could close down the gay pub/club was because they could argue it was a place to meet to facilitate future illegal acts. And the Law would back them up. In this way 'the establishment' would harass and suppress aspects of gay life far beyond what the law itself censured.

The act only partially decriminalised certain situations - groups were still illegal even in a private house when the 3rd person might be in a separate room brewing tea at the time. So even after 1967, the harassment and suppression still survived. It's still there today - only diluted, less extreme and rarer.

As GG is in 1966 this series, I'd guess we are gonna cover the act's passing into law in summer 67 and Bacchus's reaction to its adoption sometime this or next series. This will be interesting to see as I'm fed up seeing anything pink going downhill to inevitable grief followed closely by death or incarceration! Perhaps I should stop watching a police cop show from the 60s
