Seriously, who'd be cretin enough to "wonder why Dalziel is pretending to be a doorman"? I don't know anyone who can't tell the difference between an actor and one of his characters.

You do have a point about the tendency for the best-known of the guest actors usually turning out to be the killer - but then Sarah Lancashire is well-known too! It's a bit of a lack of imagination on the part of the directors; they should shake this perception up far more often than they do.

Ive been watching this and a Senior officer has just come into the office. Who seems to be Sgt Bacchus father in Law. When he was last seen I think he had a bald head with blonde bits at the side and glasses. Hes now got a full head of black hair, large tash and no glasses.

Everything is "down to a price."

Production companies often choose characters rather than actors as it's a safe bet and less expensive, no need to give actors time to "get into the part."
"Here's the script, have a quick read through and off you go."

For example, if they wanted a neurotic, surly teenager, you got Sarah Smart...
Now if they want a neurotic surly thirty-three year old.. guess who?

I was exaggerating for effect. However the point stanRAB - Casting Warren Clarke in another BBC cop show is poor casting coming relatively recently after his outings as Dalziel. He did the role for yonks and is closely identified with it and this identification is only exacerbated when he turns up in other cop shows (I didn

I know this is your 'opinion', but I have to ask - what similarities, exactly, are there in the portrayals of Frost and Del-Boy? Just one will be fine...

If next year I see Warren Clarke (or John Nettles or Martin Shaw or Trevor Eve or James Bolam or David Jason or Denis Waterman etc) playing a college porter (or any other seemingly insignificant role usually played by an unknown or an extra) in a crime drama then I will know that they are going to end up as the killer - or else why have they been cast, and why would they take the part unless it was going to the most important one in the story apart form the regulars?

As for Warren Clarke playing gay - his first breakthrough TV role, was "Sophie" in Jewel in the Crown. He was very convincing in that role.

He played a college porter in a recent episode of Lewis too.

However, he's an actor, not a policeman masquerading as a college porter, so as Dalziel and Pascoe aren't being made any more I'd imagine he takes work as it's offered.

I don't like GG. Martin Shaws voice in this programme puts me off, I find it irritating. he should use the same voice he did in Judge John Deed and speaking of that, that should never have been scrapped!

Looks like complaints from the legal profession played a great part in DeeRAB demise according to wikipedia!

Bring back Deed!

Warren Clarke is a good actor and I would like to see him in more programmes, for example I was disappointed that his John Prescott role as a Deputy PM did not get a series, but for him to play two college porters in crime dramas a few weeks apart seems to be a mistake.

Once you see someone like Clarke in what would normally be a bit part you know that he is going to be the killer (actually I did not watch either Lewis and Gently to the end so I do not know if he was the killer or not).

Yes as soon as Warren Clarke appeared briefly, I thought he'll be back, become a central character and "he'll have done it." It's always the same and ruins any suspense there might have been.

Same with sets, if a room which has obviously taken quite a time to prepare appears briefly, you know the action will definitely return to it.

This programme certainly exposes the severe limitations in Martin Shaw's acting skills, but then I thought "The Professionals" was rubbish.

I don't think you can expect Warren Clarke to turn down a role because some viewers might think he is actually a character from another series - the poor bloke would never work again if that was the case. But then viewers can be very gullible - I know Granada used to get requests to book a room at the Rover's Return for a private function:eek:

I remember reading in the papers soon after The Professionals began, that Martin Shaw said he didn't really feel suited to his role.

Who'd have thought it - Dalziel was a teapot!

It was pretty obvious who was the wrong 'un from the start. I thought that the episode was OK but a bit too long. Groovy man.

Never mind the accents, I'm more concerned by the fact that the makers appear to think Durham's on the coast.

And are they teleporting from there to Swan Hunters at Wallsend? :D
