GEORGE CLOONEY IS... "The Same Character He Played Before..."

Harsh but not innacurate :D

To be fair to George, Clint Eastwood has done very well out of rarely playing anyone except Harry Callaghan or a variation of.

But I will admit Clooney has a limited acting range.
 
His image is so smooth and cool that he could play the same role (a parallel of his public persona) in every film, but in 'Intolerable Cruelty' (terribly under-rated IMO) and 'O Brother' he really showed that he could send himself up.

Definitely a modern day Cary Grant (though Hollywood seem more prepared to honour him than Cary).
 
You could say that of many Hollywood actors/movie stars but it does not mean they are not good actors also,just limited at characterization as they are so distinctive or cool in real life.
Like George & Clint,Jack Nicholson has been mostly playing the same character for years.
So has Tom Cruise.

Now Johnny Depp,there is a movie star who is also a great character actor.
 
That's my point entirely. Someone like Tom Cruise tenRAB to play the same role all the time (i.e. Tom Cruise!) and when he tries to do something out of character, like Born on the 4th of July, he looks completely out of his depth.

Interestingly (and maybe he was joking?!) on the Oscars red carpet last night, he was saying he hasn't been paid to appear in his last few movies, and I wouldn't be surprised if that were true. He seems to combine the big money films (Oceans 11, 12, 13 :yawn:) in which he does play up to the public persona, then goes off and does the interesting stuff like Syriana, Michael Clayton, Solaris for the love of it.
 
OK - I thought you meant he was either in films where he played smooth guys or films where sent up his smooth persona. His acting in Michael Clayton was first-rate, he was in very good company with Tilda Swinton and Tom Wilkinson and showed he is a heavyweight actor when he neeRAB to be. In Syriana he was literally a heavyweight; he looked terrible, and not in a self-satirising way. His presence must have helped at the box office but it was, with hinRABight, not a very good film.
 
No probs! And I think he's great when sending himself up. Takes someone really comfortable in his own skin to do that (and what a skin ... :o) The only other actor who springs to mind who does that as well is Johnny Depp.

Cary Grant was always one of my favourite actors, and George is right up there with him.
 
Then you haven't seen O Brother, Where Art Thou or you couldnt possibly make that statement.

He's not my favourite actor but that film is wonderful and he does a fabulous, non-George Clooney performance. And I dig his hairnets :D
 
He's a modern equivalent of Cary Grant: ridiculously good looking, not much of an actor and as a result, plays the same character perfectly in every movie.:)
 
Just seen it on dvd and thought it was very well acted , but slow and not much action.. The dvd case describes it as "a heart-pounding action packed thriller". It was NONE of that. A big dissapointment.
