I got an assignment coming up in the next year for my music tech course which basically is to pick a song, change it's genre completely along with 3 instruments in the song and record it, any suggestions? ideas as to any interesting songs that could be given an interesting genre change?

Turn it into a punk song.

Maybe a song off of John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, all those songs seem pretty dark to me and could afford a genre reenvisioning. Then there's the obvious funny ones, a Backstreet Boys or Britney Spears song or something like that. I could think of a few hip-hop songs, NWA's **** the Police springs to mind, maybe a Frank Zappa song like Trouble Every Day, or a punk song, such as Anarchy in the UK or I think Blitzkrieg Bop could make a good industrial song.

It could also be interesting to take a new wave, electronica, or prog song with heavy synthesizer and replace the synths with guitars and such and give it a more organic feel.

And if i was looking for one i'd take it, i just need to come up with something interesting and gain marks, You reckon an up-tempo ska version of Joni Mitchels 'big yellow taxi' would work??

Hah, i'm glad to hear, i was a little unsure, i might go with that, you guys can keep putting out ideas if you want, i'd have probably posted a thread like this even if i didnt have an assignment anyway.

Turn a pop song into a punk song, or a DHR/4-beat song into some kind of indie, downtempo track with digitally panned instrumentals.

Pop->punk, ie. 99 Red Balloons covers.

I thought it would be interesting to turn something electronic into something more organic, or vice versa. Or something lo-fi into a piece of studio wizardry, or again vice versa.

You could take a reggae or soul song and put it it to a 60's/70's sound. It's what alot of mod and punk banRAB did at the time.

The Clash - Police And Thieves.

The Jam - (Love is like a) Heatwave.

The Stranglers - Walk On By
