Generation to generation series recomendations

Nope, strike two. My granny hates that show, she thinks the kids are to grotesque. I used to watch cartoons with her when I was younger and I remember she enjoyed Hey Arnold! (although those kids were fairly grotesque too, but she loved Helga and her attitude) and she tolerated SpongeBob. Other than that, I recently lent her my LTGC vol. 5 and 6, because those two collections have the most B&W and WWII era cartoons, and so far she has thoroughly enjoyed it.

You might try Fairly Oddparents, although if the witchcraft thing is a big deal maybe not. My partner, who's in the same generation as your grandmother enjoys it, particularly any of the Adam West Catman episodes. Total Drama Island is great, particularly if she has any interest in reality tv, as the satire is really good.

Some other older dvds I've found he enjoys in short doses (I tend to marathon) are Real Adventures of Johny Quest, Ducktales, Darkwing Duck, Gargoyles.

A few things that are not on dvd which we also watch together regularly are Kim Possible, Recess, Pepper Ann, and Filmore. Unfortunately Disney XD doesn't run those as often anymore. I know it may loo like I'm a huge Disney fan, I'm really not, but I find that Disney animation has an ability to create very relatable shows that don't get super annoying as we get older.

grannies are tricky, it helps to know the type of humor they enjoy in general. was she an abbott and costello fan or a 3 stooges girl?

justice league is good, samurai jack should work, johnny bravo has always been one of my favs, dexter looking back does have alot of made for 9 year olds, jokes that were right up my alley but still good looking back. courage the cowardly dog might somehow be lucky and pass. slapstick is really A GREAT generational gap, i wish shows would stick to that more and leave gross out humor from the slapstick fun. also try some anime, case closed has a good mystery to it. creativity is the key she is watching cartoons to be closer to you and is a bit bored challenge her a bit.

as for 4-8 you need to pick out the looney tunes shorts so that the kids do not get too bored. i would start off with wile coyote, move to foghorn leghorn, then daffy and bugs. also a great one is tom and jerry. general slapstick works wonders for entertainment. also dark wing duck great show, it really gets kids going. plus duck tales is and was a great show. before you start with the disney shows it would help if the kid saw some of the movies first jungle book helps with duck tales helps the kids get the idea of the characters (worked for me).

as they progress classic cartoon network. flintstones, the jetsons, yogi something so they can get involved in stories and characters.

8-12 prime cartoon desire, samurai jack, avatar, johnny bravo, the EDs, gargoyles, justice league, batman and superman TAS, static shock is good, star wars the micro series directed by genndy, the kid should develop a sense for what they like. after that go with what they like.

quick note on the sherlock holmes series: i did like it, maybe i have seen the episodes too much but they got redundant. i like mysteries in general especially ones that can hold me for a bit and holmes did a great job of it. they over complicated things at times and had to cop out due to time and money constraints but overall a good show.

Some of the older cartoons I've found that appeal to the 9-yr old girl in our household are:

The Pink Panther
The Jetsons
Scooby-Doo
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe
DuckTales
The Smurfs
Sailor Moon
Magic Knight Rayearth
Alvin and the Chipmunks (although she likes the movie better than the cartoons)

and in smaller doses, she'll watch some of these over my shoulder, but won't ask to watch them by herself:
Looney Tunes
Tom and Jerry
Yogi Bear
Pixie and Dixie and Mr. Jinks
Huckleberry Hound

For the most part, I think she likes the shows that tell a story over the six-minute gag format of the ones listed above (with the exception of the Pink Panther, which she may like as it isn't as violent as Looney Tunes or Tom and Jerry or some of the early H-B stuff).

abbott and costello fan. She wouldn't like FOP(It had gross humor in some of the episodes)I tried Phieneas and Ferb and she likes it but I don't.That should give a sorta sense of what she likes.

Tiny Toons, Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, and Freakazoid might all be good canidates too. (Although I must admit that Wakko's belching concerts are not my favorites, they are few and far between)

If your granny was born in the forties, then she probably grew up with golden age slapstick short film series like Tom & Jerry and Looney Tunes. In which case she, like shadocat2576 said, would probably enjoy certain 90's toons like Animaniacs and Tiny Toons, which were pretty much intended to be upgraded versions of the golden age formula.
