General Surgeon education?

I have some inquiries about this profession.
I know it takes 3-4 years of college - 4 years of Medical School and a residency...Am i Right??
How long is the residency? Some people told me its 5 years in length. its 4 years of residency and 1 year of internship.
What is Internship? Can a physician not do the internship and just do the 4 years residency and become a surgeon after 3-4 years of college, 4 yrs of Med-School and 4 years of residency?

Uhhh that's what the INTERNSHIP is for to gain real world experience and work hands on with the physician. I'm sorry but, I don't think you can beat around this. 95% of majors require you to complete an internship before you can actually do the job correctly.
