Geek Cast Radio Network's Top 100 Animated Series Countdown

It's not necessarily the amount, its the ones he listed. Although I can concede that Cowboy Bebop did a lot of anime in the landscape of American animation, it's certainly not #1 worthy.

FLCL, Paranoia Detective, NGE all in top 20? Most of them are barely blips on the animation landscape. FLCL might have the most recognition there state side because of it caused a HUGE stir, thats not to say a lot of people wont agree the mere rumors of NGE did a lot to get people in anime.

But seriously, none of those are top 20 worthy if we're talking about a list for the US. Pokemon and Digimon should both be in the top 20 long before any of those 5 listed. Their iconic power did a lot for animation and anime; that's not to say that I would personally put them there (I'm honestly not sure without attempting to place them myself). That's not even taking into account things like DBZ, Naruto, Bleach and even Death Note; all of which had a stronger impact.

Those top 20 spots have to REALLY have an excessively strong feature about them to poll there. A quality that either echoed throughout the entire animation landscape or caused such a stir that the series will not soon be forgotten. Theres only realistically a handful of series that can or should poll there.
 
I wouldn't say that either, I just assumed that's what you meant in your post when you said "it's a total parody of Johnny Quest".
 
I have a hunch that it will be either Batman: TAS or The Simpsons. Of course, I could be wrong.

I'd also be pleasantly surprised if The Mysterious Cities of Gold, Touch and Legend of the Galactic Heroes shows up on the list. However, considering the staff's apparent bias (I haven't listened to the podcast, yet) against japanese cartoons and the fact that the later two has never had an official english release this is undoubtedly wishful thinking on my part.

As for Gundam Wing, out of the relatively few "Gundam" shows I've seen, I consider it the weakest. It wasn't bad and I did like Treize as a villain, but in terms of characters and plot I thought that Zeta and Turn A (for example) were far superior.
 
I do think it's weird their criticism of Evangelion is that it only lasted one season. If they've just read a little bit about it, not even needing to see it, they'd know it only lasted one season because it was telling a self-contained complete story (well, if you can call that ending "complete"). Plus the constant rereleases, remakes, and toys make it about as pimped out as any major hit.
 
A strong impact does not always correlate with quality. That's like saying Britney Spears and Soulja boy should be heralded among the top singers just because they made their mark on pop culture, or saying Titanic is one of the best movies ever just because of how many tickets it sold.

I don't think it had an anime bias at all, adult swim/prime time comedies yes, but not anime



I could write a whole novel practically that would outline how the 90s was a dark time for animated series overall. Actually the 80s was a much brighter time than any decade since the early classics. Granted the 90s wasnt as dark as the 70s were but there were some major 'political' things that made both the 70s and 90s pretty bad decades in animation. The thing that saved the 90s was the few gems that were able to sneak through in spite of the conditions. If you want pages of defense of these points just let me know and I can dig out all my old research on this very topic.




No way is Cowboy Bebop #1 Animated series of all-time...come on now!
 
@ Knighthammer: As I said in one of my previous posts. The countdown is not for in depth "Interesting" information. It's for a narrow more line of sight kinda thing. ToonCast is where we get in depth. Thanks for the feedback.... and just to letcha know I didn't need to calm down when I wrote that post. I was perfectly calm at the time. You'll find I'm a person that speaks his mind. OptimusSolo says it's because I'm a stubborn old man lol
 
Mhm, Space Ghost C2C is probably the main inspiration for nearly every adult animated comedies.

Without Adult Swim, there would not only be none of their original creations, plus Futurama and Family Guy would not have been resurrected, Archer would never been made (Since it's made by the Sealab and Frisky Dingo guys) and The Simpsons, Family Guy, Futurama, South Park and B&B would probably be the only Adult Animated Comedies ever made.

Plus, without Toonami, the anime fanbase would only be a small fraction of what it is now.
 
With my personal list I judge things mostly on historical impact and there is no way Cowboy Bebop had the same impact as Looney Tunes, Flintstones, Simpsons, and a few others.

Also, I feel the need to remove as much bias as possible. For example, none of those three shows I listed are my favorite. Whenever I find myself wanting to list one of my favorite of all time near the top I have to stop and say, 'wait a second I am just doing that cause i love the show so much, these other shows still had a bigger impact'

Looking at that list, I would also NEVER rank PPG ahead of Rocky and Bullwinkle or Pinky and the Brain ahead of Animaniacs.
 
Sigh, so true. These lists are always seem to be based first and foremost on nostalgia, secondly on name-recognition, and perhaps thirdly on actual quality.
 
The fact that Powerpuff Girls has the lowest spot on the list automatically gives me a reason to question the contributor's taste.

I do hope this list gives some justice to TMNT 2k3. It's been overshadowed by the 1980's version for far too long.
 
Comparing animated television series to pop singers is like comparing apples and oranges man sorry not going to justify that comparison by trying to defend it.

With respect....I have to be blunt. I think this is dead wrong to the point of it being a matter of fact, not opinion. Here is a list 90s cartoons that were good to varying degrees in no special order: Batman TAS, Superman TAS, Gargoyles, Darkwing Duck, The Legend of Prince Valiant, SWAT Kats, The Real Adventures of Johnny Quest, Dexter's Laboratory, Doug, Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM), Samurai Jack, The Powerpuff Girls, X-Men TAS, The Tick, Roughnecks: Starship Troopers, Exosquad, The Pirates of Dark Water, Futurama, King of the Hill, Batman Beyond, Animaniacs, Tiny Toons, Reboot, Beast Wars, Aeon Flux.

Not completely thorough perhaps (I'm pretty sure it's not, in fact), but it's a big list already and I haven't even started taking Japanese animation into account. Does this really qualify as only "a few" gems? Really? Next question: does it really stand to reason that all of this happened thanks to mere good fortune? That's a whole lot of luck.

Now yes, the 90s also gave us some very lame material like Sonic Underground and Street Sharks and Princess Gwenevere and the Jewel Riders and, ugh, Street Fighter and Double Dragon. But we can dig up such low-tier material in any era. Yes, there was some censorship in the 90s. But Gargoyles at least got to make an episode like "Deadly Force" and more and more we saw action that literally didn't pull punches. And I think we all agree that at the very least, the 90s both started a renaissance for superhero animation (starting w/ Batman TAS) and followed the trail The Simpsons blazed for animated sitcoms with KoTH and Futurama and Family Guy.

Beyond that, and perhaps most importantly of all, cable became a player. We got Cartoon Network. With the likes of Samurai Jack and The Powerpuff Girls, we got creator-driven cartoons of a sort that the 80s just didn't. The 90s also saw the start of Nicklodeon's Nicktoons.

So, no. By any reasonable standard, animation expanded on television in the 1990s. In both terms of programming on the air and creativity. I don't think it matters one whit what research you may have about studio or network "politics" or what have you, given what I have stated here.

Anyhow. I may find it interesting to compare your list with IGN's and make arguments for cartoons that didn't quite manage to make it. Until next time.
 
I don't disagree with many of your points here but when I am not dead tired I will counter with some pretty interesting stuff that hopefully you can appreciate.
