Gears of war 2 general questions!?

These may seem noobish, im not a noob Iv just never found the answer to these What are ranks? currently,the number in front of my name is 37,is that my rank? Whats with the bars and stars and all and how do you get them?

Also, my kill/death ratio is 0.9 at the minute,to get to 1.0 do i have to have the same amount of kills than deaths?
