For my GCSE art sketchbook ( the topic is surfaces ) we have to do a final piece and i chose the topic of a tropical lagoon because the others didnt really appeal to me that much.

I am supposed to:
- design a sculpture for a tropical lagoon
- the design should clearly reflect a tropical lagoon
- needs to appeal to both adults and children

I was going to make a mermaid, but i tried and failed. I found it really hard to get the proportions right :(
So any suggestions would be amazing thankyou :)

Well if the topic is surfaces, then maybe concentrating on surfaces in terms of textures?

When I hear the phrase tropical lagoon, I picture a beach type area on the edge of an island like Hawaii.

Oh gawd, I just though of something that I'd probably do if this was my project - imagine a mermaid's tail poking out of the water as if she'd just done a jump out of the watre like a dolphin. Then I'd make the tail actually a palm/coconut tree, and have it on an island surrounded by water.

I don't know what medium you're allowed to use, but I'd do the water very smooth and glassy, the sand rough, the tree trunk rough and scaly, and the treetop using similar surface and texture to an ordinary tree trunk.

Tails are way easier to sculpt.

Hope this helps.

Do a snorkel and goggles, and then for the google eye pieces have it as fish tanks, and have a shark or a palm tree coming out the top of the snorkel!

Hope this helps :)
